I don't know if the novel was written this way or there were no historical background on her, but the script writers have done a really awful job in her character. There's not one adjective to descibe her and her relationship to YSS is even worse. She liked him for no reason, became jealous when he was around another woman, shared how she felt to YSS, then all of a sudden their married. Why did YSS marry her? Do we know any background info on her? Why is the relationship between the two so stiff? How does YSS feels about her?
You would think that the wife of a great hero like YSS would get some acknowledgement. The korean people are the primary target and such details are not necessary. But if they were planning to send this drama overseas, some explaination could've helped.

In Chosun dynasty period, marriage was determined entirely by parents. A man had to marry a woman he had never met before, because his parents ordered him to do so. In that Confucianism-oriented society, as you already know, parents' order was absolute and you can not disobey them. In addition, premarital relations (physical and sometimes emotional ones) were severely forbidden by law. If a woman has relations before marriage, she is likely to be killed publicly.
What I want to say is... Yeon-wha and Soon-shin is quite a normal couple for the times. Even if they don't love each other (at least Soon-shin doesn't love her), they respect each other as a life-long partner. Korean viewers seem to prefer such a temperate relationship to passionate love, because I saw many of them wrote on the KBS board that they hate Mijin so much while admiring Yeon-hwa. (So sad,,,)

I don't even remember a time seeing YSS hug his wife. Or maybe he did, but there was little emotion in it. It didn't even seem like a "I love you so much" kind of hug, but a "Cheer up, we're friends" kind of hug. Was it really an arranged marriage? I don't think all arrange marriages are failures.

Well, mistresses are always younger, sexier and more interesting than wives...

In this case, that wouldn't take too much.

She does appear to have received less than she was willing to give. This drama does not seem terribly interested in the relationships between men and women (with the exception of Mi-jin and YSS); rather, the emphasis seems to be on the relationships between men and other men. Probably not surprising, as it is a history of a warrior. Bo

Taejo Wang Guhn {from EWG} had 29 wives {he married a woman from each important clan in Koryo, so he could prevent turmoil between the regional leaders} Yi Soon Shin is much more worried about his dead comrades, than his beautiful wife. {she really is}

Taejo Wang Guhn {from EWG} had 29 wives {he married a woman from each important clan in Koryo, so he could prevent turmoil between the regional leaders} Do you think AOW and EWG are better for that reason? You let me recall that Wan Guhn had 29 wives. Wow! He had 25 sons and 9 daughters. The 4th king of Chosun, the Great Sejong had 18 sons and 4 daughters among whom he had 8 legitimate princes and 2 legitimate princesses. I don't know how many concubines he had. Yi Soon Shin is much more worried about his dead comrades, than his beautiful wife. {she really is} Women take very weak roles in this show. HISTORICALLY, Admiral YSS had 1 wife and 2 concubines. Korean spectators are not interested in the admiral's love story. That's why fictional Mijin's story made them angry. (Personally, I detest polygamy.) I think the wife of YSS looks better with light make-up.

Do you think AOW and EWG are better for that reason? DOn't take me seriously. I like AOW better becuase it had better plotlines, and better characters. Don't get me wrong, I like this show as well. However, I prefer the former.

I apologize if I have offended you. I didn't write my posting with serious tone. I'm following AOW episodes in my leisure time. Because 300kb VOD of YSS is my first choice, I just have watched a few of AOW. But I'm already facinated with it. It's my second historical drama on Koryo period ! (The first one I have watched was a drama about the fall of Koryo and the establishment of Chosun dynasty. It was aired in 80's.) I like Orang, the female bodyguard of Muby !

It's alright, Florel.
BTW, can you send me a private message, concerning the fate of Chun-Su and the other two. I understand that you have seen past this point, unless i'm mistaken.
