I thought they were Manchus. There were some people here that said to watch out for episode 30 for a massive battle with the “Manchus”. That’s what they said. I don’t think “Suk Soon” is Nurhaci now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nurhaci Nurhaci would’ve been a teenager or young man in his 20’s in 1572.

1. He is not Nurhaci. 2. Episode 25 says it is 1586.

The Jurchens are ancestors of the Manchurians. I found an interesting site on their history. www.uglychinese.org/manchurian.htm This site contains very rich informations on asian histories (written from chinese point of view). I cite one passage from this page : "In AD 1636, Huangtaiji changed their name to Manchu from Jurchen and declared their dynasty name of 'Qing'". It's in 1636 when the Manchurians invaded Chosun. (A nephew of YSS died at one battle against them.) In Episode 26, the drama is situated in 1586. So, Nurchachi was 23 years old. Jurchen leaders in our drama belong to a tribe of the Jurchens. But it seems me they had no direct relation with Nurchachi.

And thus began the long descending decline of the Chosun. If it wasn't internal corruption and infighting enough, Chosun was for over a hundred years, under attack from the South (Hideyoshi Japan and/or Japanese pirates who constantly raided and burned the southern coasts), the constant thorn on the side Jurchen/Manchus to the north, and the Ming/Qing China dynasties to the north west that Chosun had to pay tributes to. Chosun in summary was everybody's bitch.

Chosun fell in 1911 {well, around then} And, I hope that was an excuse to use foul language.

Hallo, Jph. I think you forget the 18th century which is called "renaissance" in the history of Chosun.
After the long dark period which had begun with Imjin War in 1592, Chosun was reestablished and prospered culturally and economically in social and political stability during the 18th century.
The darkest period in Korean history started in the early of the 19th century and it continued until to the mid 20th century.
I think Korea is luckier than Italia in political history (before 19th century). In addition to internal political conflicts, italian peninsula suffered from continuous invasions of Huns, Lombards, Muslims, Germans, Normans, Aragoneses, Frenchmen, etc. from the end of Roman empire.
