i sure wish i could wipe that disgusting sneer and smirk off of byung-tek's face. and the government officials are so corrupt , yes people i know this is a startling news flash ;D....but it still makes me crazy. i like the way yi soon shin's father played with the magistrate for a bit, then got right in his face, and by the throat....it made me feel so good about him....and the fact that he finally recognized how extraordinary soon shin is, and gave his blessing for him to take the exam. (and VIB, you are right.....dad has very nice eyes i am so happy soon shin did not have to compromise himself and take the exam for the disgusting byung-tek. i hate that bribery kept him from getting first place, as he so greatly deserved. it broke my heart for him to see that expression on his face as the names were read. oh, and the way soon shin carried his brother on his back, and then chun su carried soon shin....VIB you commented on this before....it is a lovely thing to see. and i think i have this right now...when angry and/or frustrated and/or hurt...if you are on a dirt road you clutch soil in both fists, if you are by the water (or in it) you SCREAM.

yeah,
when soon shin's dad jumped across the table and grabbed the magistrate, I stood up and put my hands in the air. daddy's got some ballz after all! (as well as pretty eyes - i wonder if they are natural)
i don't know what bothers me more about byoung taek - his sneer or his buck teeth (which you see more pronounced when he sneers)
when chun soo grabbed that brush, i was laughing so hard. christy kim translated it in a different way than i did (which i will in clude in the summaries)
the peddler actually said that the brush was made from the hairs of a racoon's armpit! i don't know what's funnier - the fact that it was made of armpit or the fact that that made it so special,
the actor who plays yo shin, I thought he did such a good job even though we only see him in a few episodes. the last talk he had with his brother before leaving i thought was so moving.
and of course YSS trying to imitate KDS. but at least he mixes it up - he screams on dirt too

YSS's dad is so coooool (putting the magistrate in his place). I also like Chun-su a lot. That was so thoughtful to get YSS a "lucky" new pen for the exam. And then he threw salt in the eyes of the magistrate's entourage of bullies. So sad the conversation when YSS asked Chun-su if it hurt when his father hit him. I too was hoping SO MUCH that truth and justice would prevail, and YSS would get first place in the exam. I was so disappointed.

YSS losing to the corrupt is a theme that continues throughout his life...
i bet you won't be surprised the next time it happens
or the next time after that

surprised? no. saddened, yes, each and every time.
and still, he prevailed over all of the injustices....a man of exceptional strength of heart and soul.

I think his dad was right. It's a crying shame, but he was only giving his kids the honest benefit of his wisdom by trying to steer them clear of prominence and earnest public spirit. It was better to be a farmer. You know, I have some questions of Yi Soon Shin's integrity thus far. He should have kept his word and taken the test for young Dubya. Also, I think he should have stayed to fight the bullies and not left his peasant buddy alone. The test could be taken again later, I would think.
