LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TO GO BEFORE THE IMMORTAL YI SOON SHIN STARTS!!!! ;D in anticipation of what will undoubtedly be a fine drama, here are some entertaining glimpses into the Admiral's life, taken from Imjin Changch'o, his memorials to court. - on the day of his birth, an astrologer predicted that the child would, at age 50, become an admiral. - yi soon shin's mother dreamt that she heard the voice of her father-in-law speaking to her from heaven saying, "the baby will become noble; you shall call his name Sunsin." - though the admiral chose a military way of life, had he preferred otherwise, he could have been a famous scholar as he showed a great aptitude for reading the chinese classics. - apparently the admiral possessed great physical strength as well. one story recalls his visit to an ancestral grave where he found the stone spirit guardian turned on its side. Though he ordered the servants to set it upright, they could not, due to the massive weight of the statue. Still in full dress, the admiral shooed them out of the way and using his back, nonchalantly pushed the stone back to its upright position.

- a minister who had heard that Yi Sun Shin possessed some fine arrows, he invited the admiral to an archery contest and asked him to give him the arrows, to which the admiral replied that he was agreeable, but wondered what the people would think (basically reminding the minister that this could be taken as a bribe).
the minister automatically retracted his request.

- at 38, when the admiral was a staff officer, he was ordered to lead the soldiers north. his commander later was angered to learn that Yi Soon Shin had led the army out the west gate. when he angrily questioned his actions, yi replied, "...the west is the direction of metal [one of the five cardinal principles of nature with wood water earth and fire] which represents autumn which signifies war and destruction - that is why." the commander forgot his anger and was greatly pleased with this response.

oh absolutely
he's my complete hero.
i can't wait for it to start
kbs has just updated their website on him too so now there are more pictures from the drama
one of the things i don't like about the novel that the drama is based on is that they wrote in that he had an affair with a woman. i don't recall seeing any historical evidence to that effect and any text i've read on him describes a man whose character would make it impossible for him to do such a thing. i know he had a concubine in addition to his wife (well the man is human after all) but apparently he slept with his belt on hahahahahahahhahah

hahahahaha. well we must remember, that even our heroes, whoever they may be, are just human beings after all and, therefore, are imperfect, if just a tiny little bit. this is great info. keep that dog barking. ;D

a not so pleasant fact, but interesting nonetheless.
- during the war with japan, japanese commanders raised a monument in kyoto called the mound of ears that contained over 100,000 ears and noses cut from the koreans defending their cities
-though the loss of cities to the japanese were crushing blows, koreans never lost their fighting spirt. the garrison of hwang chin fended off 50,000 invaders with only 3,000 men, fighting until the women cut off their hair to restring bows and the last arrow was fired. hwang chin then rushed the marauding japanese army and was shot and killed.
-when the japanese were celebrating, a kisaeng (dancing girl) invited a japanese general to dance with her and then leapt off a cliff with him in her arms. this act is still remembered during the annual rites in chinju

-the admiral was told of the death of his youngest son, who had fallen at the hands of japanese bandits, after he had a dream about myon. he was so stricken with grief that he was unable to concentrate on his duties. later he had another dream where myon bewailed his lot saying, "father, why do you not avenge my death?" after a few such dreams. the admiral was alerted to the capture of a japanese prisoner and upon interrogation it was found that it was the same man who had killed myon. the admiral ordered his head cut off.

-the admiral was injured multiple times in his life, but each time he either bandaged the broken bone, pulled the arrowhead out or acted as if nothing was out of the ordinary if he had to have a bullet pulled out of two inches of flesh from his back
