I thought they changed their whole names, including the last names?

I don't really know. If anyone remembers the scene where the mountain-teacher guy tells her to change her name, I think he told her there. He may have just told her to change it from Jae-hui to Chae-ok or he may have told her to change her last name too. I seem to remember her last name being Kang.

Wow, you are good with remembering their names. I am terrible. I just remember Chae-ok and Lt. Yoon.
Well when he told her to change her "name" you can assume that he meant first and last name. So the rebel and Chae-ok probably have different last names as well.

They only changed their first names. Their last name (Jang) is still the same.

Was that a common name? Because I seem to recall hearing his last name mentioned in an introduction. Hers, as well, but she wasn't ever formally introduced (with her real/fake name) to him since they were pretending she was a deaf/mute man.
How on earth could she possibly think that he didn't know she was a damo? She's run into him on numerous occasions (granted, in disguise) - near the river crossing, when she was selling ginseng, outside the police station wall.... Oh well.

Actually, on the "last name" issue (and if you use the term "surname" or "family name" you can take into account the Korean habit of putting the family name first), it seems there are NO uncommon surnames in Korea. From my drama experience, there are Park, Kim, Jang, Suh and that's about it. Oh, oh, oh! I forgot Lee/Yi!! So, no, being told someone's surname is the same as yours is no clue at all. I like Jenny's "familyphobia" solution of checking out people's ages. Hah hah. Very good. And so logical. On another note, I missed episodes 4 and 6 altogether because I seem to have messed up the taping schedule in my many attempts to adjust it to get all the beginnings and endings. (I think I skipped several episodes of Yi Soon Shin, too, but that's not so critical.) So, I've got all the odd ones, but none of the even ones (I can retape Saturday's on Tuesday morning, so at least I'll get the final episode.) (I just got a lot of people singing. Ech.) The funny part is, I'm having no trouble at all following the action. I guess I'll have to follow my own advice and rent it. Or maybe, with the way things are going at KBC 28, they'll rerun it next year. Bo
