I felt so bad for her when the dad of the chunky guy who's always after her was trying to tell her that a marriage between her and her son could never be. And the fact that she just accepted it as something that had to be because of her social position was even more heartbreaking. "How can a slave compare to a human being?" That's so sad that for most of her life she had to go through and be reminded of that fact.

I think that this trapped feeling is one of the big draws of this show for me. It's one thing when a capable hero takes charge of the situation; here she is clearly capable, a lot more than the chubby guy, but she has no power, no standing in her society. Not even a human being! ****

It's also more understand when it's a historical show and this happens. In the last show where they had the war of the classes (*cough*phoenix*cough*) it was much more frustrating and not as understandable.
I still feel badly about it though. I mean, she should have some pride. Her father was *important* enough to be a traitor!

Didn't they say she came from a noble family? I think that's part of the draw of this thing. By birthright, she's actually above the man to whom she is a slave! Circumstances have dragged her down.
The whole "lot of a slave" speech was very touching. But didn't you laugh when she knocked out the boyfriend with one kick? I thought the staging on that was brilliant.

They did say that she was from a high class, so, yes, she would be higher than Yoon and Mr. Roly Poly.
Oh yes, the kick was awesome. I thought that it was funny that he even tried. She's a much better fighter than roly-poly there.
One thing that I am wondering about - they can free slaves - they freed Horse Boot and gave him some land. And, Yoon says that he loves Chae-ok. If he really did, though, wouldn't he free her and let her be on her merry way? Instead, he won't let her leave the force, even after the speech. It was really sad, but it also makes me dislike his character because he's so selfish that he won't do what's best for the person that he thinks he loves.

So is it up to Lt. Yoon whether she is becomes free? and if she does would he then be able to marry her?

It's not something that's really up to Yoon. If Yoon had any say in the matter, he probably would have freed her and married her a long time ago. She's a slave because her family was accused of treason. I don't know if you guys remember Capt. Yi (Won Hae) telling Yoon that Chae Ok can only survive if she's in the police force? Basically, if she weren't a Damo, she'd have to live on the run or in hiding like Sung Baek.

So kind of like what she's doing now?
I hope that the general doesn't jump to conclusions and punish Chae-ok. I'm not sure - were the police guys actually good guys, or was Lt. Yoon a better protector than roly poly was? He must've been either naive or careless to not actually watch over her or get the word out that he'd kick their butts if they touched her.
Also, a demotion from damo/detective to dishmaid? How insulting. No wonder she left.
