They first referred to his mother as a concubine but then later as a second wife. From what I know, those are two completely different things. The order goes first wife down to any other wives and then below them in status are the concubines. What gives?

That kind of confused me too. She probably was a concubine. If she was a second wife, he probably wouldn't have been viewed as a "bastard". From my understanding though, she was a concubine.

Do they do that? I thought the reason they were concubines was because they weren't in the same class, so they couldn't get married.

I do not grok this either.
