Hello, guys. Let me introduce some Korean historical dramas currently airing or shooting in Korea. I hope you guys will be able to enjoy some of these dramas someday through your local channel. ;D 1. Jang Gil-San (sbs, from May 2004) I'm now falling in love with "Jang Gil-San(sbs)"! ;D As I said before in another thread, it's a fact-based story of 17th century rebel leader who was dreaming an ideal society without inequality. Go, Go, Gil-San! Overthrow the rotten world! ;D * Chinese Fan site (some video clips are available) koreanwind.net/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=6766&highlight=&page=22. Admiral Yi Soon-Shin (KBS, from August 2004) I'm also anticipating a new epic drama "Admiral Yi Soon-shin(KBS)" which would replace Age of Warriors this summer. It would be a record huge budget drama in Korean TV history. Admiral Yi is a heroic character who saved the falling country in the late 16th century international war between Korea, China and Japan. * some making films and interviews are available here. koreanwind.net/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=148833. Heroic Age (MBC, June 2004) For the first time since Dae Jang-geum ended with a huge success, MBC is preparing another ambitious hitorical drama about Hyundai's founder "Jeong Joo-young" and Samsung's founder "Yi Byeong-chol" (and their rivalry) news.joins.com/component/htmlphoto_mmdata/200405/htm_20040526171003a000a400-001.JPG-------------- However, my all-time favorite drama is... (drum beats) Female detective "DAMO(MBC, 2003)"! ;D * DAMO music video mmst://vod.diodeo.com/Data1/Data2/2/000038982-fly_damo.wmv www.mydramax.co.kr/pillar/mbc/61.wmvwww.mydramax.co.kr/pillar/mbc/54-1.wmvp.s. Thanx for the great info and tantalizing links, Choko. What would we do w/o you? Jang Gil San definitely looks very intriguing and, judging from the screen shots on the websites you posted, a bit more daring in showing skin than DJG. As you have probably seen from the DJG posts, we marvel at the portrayal of the great love between JG and Sir Min, one that is manifested in so many more profound and interesting ways. Regarding Admiral Yi Soon Shin, the AOW board had received some early buzz about this AOW-replacement, and many of the warrior-aholics on the board (me included ;D) are hoping the U.S. K-stations will do the same. The sites you posted are the first ones I have come across with a picture of the legendary Admiral. Thanx for posting some more music clips. The Damo clips were definitely high octane, too bad I missed the series. Thanx also for posting the Myeong-Seong Wang-Hu clip again. I cannot tell you how tremendously moved I am everytime I see this clip. It is a brilliant cinematic depiction of the vile and tragic historical events that led to the murder of the Last Empress of Korea. To strike at the figurative Mother of the Nation is a heinous act, a symbolic genocide that is the worst crime any human can perpetrate. I hope to see the entire film someday and learn more about the life of the Empress.

Oops, I forgot one more historical drama. 4. Bi-cheon-moo (KBS, Fall of 2004, maybe...) The transition period from Yuan dynasty to Ming dynasty in 14th century China. A Koryo boy met a half Mongol girl and fell in love with each other... but... This drama is based on the same titled Comic book, and now shooting in China. * photos of shooting koreanwind.net/bbs/viewthread.php?tid=14220* original comic book www.we6.co.kr/contents/kh/ILLU/L/bi_013.jpgAnd... Jang Gil-San. ;D Yes, more daring in showing skin than DJG, because the lowest peple of that period is freer and more straight in sexul relationship than aristocrats. In addition, she is a Kiseng.

Yes, Bi Cheon Moo looks quite interesting, the latest in a series of Sino-Korean cineartistic co-productions, no doubt. The Heroic Age is definitely one series I would like to see. It is at the same time historical, but set during modern times. The dramatization of the lives of these two great men, indeed visionaries of their times, and the rivalry that fueled their innovations, will be fascinating to watch! Defo a must-see, methinks. Thanx for pointing out the cla$$ implications of the Jang Gil San drama. It makes sense that the characters, on the lower rungs of Joseon society, would definitely have no inhibitions or pretensions about sex the way the upper-cla$$es are sensitive to the issue, a polemic that reminds me of the story in that English novel: Jude The Obscure by Thomas Hardy (and the 1996 movie with Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet). ;D

MBC Damo is one of the best dramas I've ever watched. I still can't believe that KBC passed in it. Everytime I think about it ... that just upsets me. Damo and SBS 1,000 Year Love were my favorite dramas from last year. I've heard a lot of good things about the drama Jang Gil San. I think I'll check it out.
It's not a historical drama but I'm looking forward to MBC The Prince's First Love. First episode airs June 23 in Korea.

Well 2 of my favorite actors, Sung Yuri (she's playing the female lead) and Kim Nam Jin (he's playing a supporting role), who coincidentally worked together before in SBS 1,00 Year Love, are part of the 'The Prince's First Love' cast. Any drama with Sung Yuri is a must watch for me.

Who knows, "Damo" may yet air on ch 28. If so, I hope it's at night with subtitles. I've heard so much about it.
I think the period of the end of the Chosun era would make a good drama. Lots of intrigue and conflict. I don't know if a show that ends in occupation by a foreign power would prove too popular, though. . .

That would be great if DAMO came to ch 28. I have heard so many good things about it. Hopefully subtitled.

Damo DVD with English subtitle! Another Great News! Congratulation! ;D I really happy to know that Damo fans are already existing in Hawaii. (Aloha! ) Damo and Dae Jang-geum was the best Korean drama of 2003! ;D I highly recommend Damo DVD to "martial art action" + "sad romance" + "historical drama" freaks. Watching director's cut DVD is more exciting even though you already watch the TV version. Chinese "Phoenix channel" has already aired Damo, and Japanese state-owned channel "NHK" reportedly plans to air it in September. Ha Ji-won, the heroine of DAMO, will shoot its movie version this fall, which will be made public next year. (Movie DAMO has nothing to do with TV DAMO. Totally different story. ;D) By the way, does YesAsia plan to add English subtitles to the making films and interview? Damo DVD has huge amount of supplements. Another DAMO M/V "Ae-Shim-ga" (The song of sad mind) music by Shin Seung-hoon (Be careful! Too many spoilers here!) www.carecamp.com/servlets/getFile?file=ssh9_t2.wmvI really hope your channel (KBC) will replace The Great Jang-geum with DAMO or other historical dramas. Well... "Fire Bird(a.k.a Phoenix)" was so so. (Good in popularity, but quite bad in criticism. Even its fans are now calling it the worst drama of this year )

Wow Choko. Firebird didn't do so well then. I wonder how it will go over with fans here. But it only went to 26 ? episodes? I was hoping for DAMO as well. I have heard so many good things about it. Plus I am one of those historical drama freaks you refer to. I find them more interesting. Maybe after Age of warriors is finished here it will be replaced by another historical drama. I can only hope.

Well like Choko mentioned, Firebird was a popular drama and it did well in the ratings department. However, I don't think the storyline went how viewers would've liked.
