I read many fan fictions before and I must say, Velvitkinbrush, you are a great writer. A muse of today!
Poor General Du.... no longer a servant of Koryo, but not a servant of Shilla.... it seems he no longer has a purpose in this life.
I have just gotten back from my vacation and I have been glued to my computer reading out this fan fiction. Fantastic work.
What's better... you allow outside influences like luvarchfiend and Chung Kyun to influence your storyline, like a true writer.
Bravo!

the archfiend was outside drinking tea at a table with choi bu and brue when his daughter came running. "ah buh jee! ah buh jeeeeeee!" she yelled, holding her arms out to him.
"ji-eun-ah!" the archfiend said delightedly. "what have you been up to today?" he asked, lifting her onto his lap.
His daughter commenced fiddling with his beard while she described her itinerary. "Well, first uh muh nee and I had something to eat, then she had the tutors teach me some more characters. She said that if i learned ten new ones today that I could go riding with ji soon. So i did! here, i'll show you!" she pulled a folded piece of paper from her skirts and opened it onto the table. "see?" she said proudly. To the three men seated at the table, every character looked the same.
the archfiend chuckled. well, why don't you go riding with ji soon then. but be careful when you sit in front of him." she nodded eagerly and ran off, leaving her paper on the table. ui min picked it up, and nodded approvingly, smiling.
"hyung nim, she's growing up very fast, isn't she?" brue observed.
ui min sighed and stroked his beard, now completely white. "yes. she looks more like her mother every day. it's a miracle she was born safely." he turned to choi bu. "speaking of which, how long has it been since any members of the choe family were found?" he inquired.
"hwang sang bae ha" choi replied, "we have not found any in the last year and a half."
ui min nodded thoughtfully. "well, keep on the alert" he said. "i don't ever want to repeat what happened four years ago."
brue and choi saluted in unison
while he sipped his tea, brue brought up the subject of general du. "he's invited you to his home for a drink" he told the archfiend."
the archfiend stopped mid-sip and slowly put his cup down. it had been nearly five years since he had last spoken to du kyung su. though he had his reservations, it would be nice to see him again. "geuh leh" he said at last, "let him know i accept." pushing his chair back, he excused himself and said, "i think i'll go see how ji eun and ji soon are doing with their riding, hehe."
choi bu and brue remained sat at the table in silence for a while. brue looked at choi, who's eyes were looking at nothing in particular. "choi jang goon" he said, breaking the silence, "how aer you?"
choi bu looked up and met brue's eyes. "i'm fine." he said. in the time since hae yon / cho chun's death choi bu had gone back into the unreadable shell that he had always worn. since the funeral, brue had not brought up the subject once but he wondered if the face he saw was a facade or genuinely recovered from the experience. choi broke brue's train of thought when he said, "we'll have to accompany the emperor tonight." he tapped his empty tea cup on the table top. "there's no telling what general du's motivations are." having said that, he pushed back his chair and went to go train the reserve troops.

that evening, general du prepared his home to receive the archfiend. "chang bi yah" he called to her.
she entered his study, "yes, uncle?"
he motioned for her to come closer. "i'm having a friend over for drinks, the emperor actually." her eyes grew wider. "don't worry" he smiled, "there's nothing underhanded to be concerned about from myself or the archfiend."
"if you say so uncle, i believe you" she said softly. she turned and walked out of the study. she misses her mother, du thought. sometimes he worried that she was still too lonely, with only him for company. she was 21 now, well past the age where she could marry. he wondered where she would ever meet anyone. he certainly didn't know anyone he could introduce her to. and the only man he had ever seen her take an interest in was pak jin jae, but she was a still a child back then. she'd probably long forgotten him. one of his servants announced that the emperor had arrived.
Du greeted him at the door, calling him by his official title. "hwang sang bae ha, welcome to my home."
"Du deh jang goon" ui min said with a familiar smile, "it has been too long my friend."
du ushered the archfiend and his two aides into the house. they sat down and he poured some wine for the three of them. "so how have you been general?" Ui Min asked, partaking of his drink.
"Hwang sang bae ha, i've been very well thank you."
the archfiend chuckled. "old friend, there's no need for the formality. we both knew each other when our hairs were all black."
"what would you suggest?" du asked
the archfiend looked up as he pondered the question. "how about yi jang goon" he ventured, "for old times' sake?"
du laughed and said, "very well yi jang goon."
"ah, brue, choi jang goon, you don't have to sit here and babysit me. i'll be fine. the general and i are just catching up on old times."
Choi bu did not seem comfortable with the idea, "Hwangs sang bae ha, I don't think-"
"nonsense" the archfiend interrupted with a blithe wave. "i'll be fine, right du deh jang goon?"
"feel free to walk around the estate" he said pleasantly.
reluctantly, the two men saluted and left the room.
"so general du," he asked setting down his cup, "why did you suddenly invite me to your house?"
du looked down at the table and said, "did you know that the last surviving of the imperial household passed away?"
of course he did. "yes, i knew" ui min replied.
"well, that being the only real confounding factor between us, now that it no longer exists, i thought we might talk" du explained.
"hm" the archfiend said.
"yi jang goon" du said in a serious tone, "i wanted to tell you what i think about your position as emperor." the archfiend was unsure of where this was going. to his surprise du said, "at first, when the royal family was exiled, i opposed your ascension, but i cannot deny that there is peace and the people are much happier. what changed?"
ui min gave a soft chuckle. "do you remember all those times you lectured me on how i used to be a man of honor and instead had become a corrupted villainous servant? du nodded. "you were right" ui min said simply. once i realized that, i made the decision never to let that sort of thing happen again." he smiled. "and being a father again helps too. i don't want my daughter ever to be ashamed of anything i do."
du smiled. "so do you feel this change is permanent?"
the archfiend took both his friend's hands in his own. "yes, i do. the people are now my first priority. and when that changes, i am no longer fit to rule. now, how about another drink?" he asked with a smile.

choi bu walked out of du's house and into the garden area. the sun was setting and the dark blue of the sky was quickly gaining on the horizon. he made his way over to the pagoda that housed the table where he had stood behind the archfiend when he he had visited general du before. it had been a long time. as he walked closer, over the hedges and flowers, he saw the figure of a woman, bent over the table. her long black hair was loose on her back and she wore a simple white cotton dress. a candle on the table flickered in the breeze. he saw that she was painting. curious, he tried to see what the subject of her efforts were. it turned out to be a middle-aged woman's face. she stood up and surveyed her work. he could make out some of the features of her face. she was very young - too old to be a girl, but still young. her face was delicately made with large eyes that gave her a lost look. turning to get more paper, she saw choi's half concealed figure and started back in surprise, knocking ink palette over. the concentrated black fluid flowed onto the table and over half her portrait. forgetting her fear, she grew indignant instead and threw her brush on the table. "is it your habit of going sneaking up on people in the dark?" she asked. he thought it was odd that he found her very pretty while she annoyed with him.
"i apologize", he said, "here, let me help you-"
she shooed him away with an exasperated sigh and began mopping up the excess ink.
"who is she?" choi found himself asking
"she was my mother" the girl answered, not looking up from her cleaning.
choi was suddenly very sorry that he had made her ruin her portrait. "i truly am very sorry. i didn't mean to startle you."
she stopped wiping the table and threw the rag down. she put a hand up to her forehead. she gave a rueful laugh and her face softened. "no, i'm the one who should be sorry," she turned her eyes to meet his. "my mother died not too long ago."
"i'm sorry" choi said. that explained why she was wearing white.
when she took her hand away from her face, choi saw that she had left an ink smear. he couldn't help smiling. "what's so amusing?" she asked.
"you...have some ink on your forehead" he told her. when he saw the dismayed expression on her face, he actually laughed.
she handed him a clean rag. "well don't just stand there and laugh, take it off!" but her voice was not angry.
he took the rag and awkwardly dabbed at her face. he'd never had someone tell him to do this sort of thing before so he was unsure how one wiped ink off a lady's face.
she rolled her eyes heavenwards. "oh come now! you'll never get anything off doing it like that. here." she took his hand. it took him completely by surprise, but she went on explaining as if women touching men's hands were no different than touching a chair. "now you put your hand where the ink is, and i'll wipe it off." he did as she requested. she actually used her hand to push the hand in which he held the rag. choi found this a bit uncomfortable until he saw that she had her eyes looking up in the direction of her forehead as if she could see the inkstain. he couldn't help it. he laughed again. she looked back down and realized what she was doing, and after an embarrassed look, she joined him in laughing. "is it all gone?" she asked him.
"most of it yes" he said, his laughter trailing off.
"thank you" she said and she gave him a warm smile.
Choi wasn't sure what to say. "you're welcome" he said simply.
she began picking up her papers and brushes. "you must be one of the emperor's men."
"yes. i am choi bu, a general in the imperial army." he couldn't believe he had just introduced himself without waiting for her to do so first!
she looked at him with a curious eye. "choi bu?"
"yes" he confirmed, wondering why she looked at him so oddly.
"General Choi Bu?" she said each word slowly.
he was starting to feel uneasy. "yes. why?"
she smiled a secretive smile. "i've heard stories about YOU" she said in a singsong voice.
normally choi was not the type of person who cared what others thought or said, but for some reason, the fact that this girl knew something about him when he knew nothing about her did not sit well with him at all. he crossed his arms, "and what stories are those?"
"don't worry about it" she told him coolly, gathering the rest of her things.
as she walked back to the house he realized he was following her. "then if you know of me, tell me something of yourself." this was the longest non-military conversation he had ever held in his life. why was he curious about her? "how do you know general du?"
"i'm his niece" she said, not turning around. "my late mother was his younger sister."
he smiled as he walked behind her. "well niece of general du kyung su, do you have a name?"
she stopped and looked at him warily. "i'll have to ask my uncle's permisision to tell you my name" she said dryly. with a bow, she entered the house, leaving him alone in the entryway.
he felt like laughing again. he was probably almost twice her age and she talked to him as if he were many years her junior. it had been a long time since he had laughed. or even thought about laughing. he hadn't even thought it possible. shaking his head, he went inside.

it is exactly how i have imagined him IF he ever met the right woman for him, all that stoic exterior drops and he is a completely different person. you have done well empress VIB, very well indeed.
