oh poor brue. how many times will i write it? it is so heartbreaking for poor brue. and choi bu. but CK, i cannot feel sorry for her. first she is choe, secondly she did this to herself. having said that, if someone were to kill my father, God forbid, and other family, i might seek revenge myself.

after, dressing her body for the funeral, brue went to choi's quarters to ask him to attend the small rite. when he got to his door he said, "choi jang goon, it's brue."
after a long pause, he heard a low voice say, "go away."
brue let himself inside to find choi's normally tidy home in absolute ruins. furniture was overturned and broken. mud was tracked everywhere. he had to step carefully as broken porcelein wine cups littered the floor. "choi jang goon?"
a cup exploded on the wall by his head. "I said GO AWAY!" choi's voice barked.
brue felt a few cuts on his face from the porcelein shards had flown. he walked further into the house to find shirtless choi bu half sitting half lying on the floor, drinking out of a wine bottle with his muddy boots still on. "you made me destroy my last cup" he said with a sarcastic laugh after he took a swig.
it made brue even sadder to see him in this state. "choi jang goon, i've prepared her body. will you come with me to cremate it?"
"no, i decline" choi said with mock formality, then he laughed bitterly.
"choi jang goon, please" brue urged. "if you don't go now, the regret will stay with you always."
choi starting laughing hysterically, but brue saw that his laughter was turning into sobs. "Brue, you don't understand! you didn't kill her! how can i see her again after what i did?"
"you did what you did because it was your duty and because you didn't know." brue said, sitting down next to his friend. "when you are more yourself will you come?" choi nodded. brue embraced his friend as he wept on his shoulder.

by nightfall, choi bu had recovered enough to start the funeral. cho chun's body, dressed in simple white cotton, a bandage around her neck, rested peacefully on a makeshift wooden pyre. choi allowed brue to set the torch. they watched her body disappear as the flames obscured her from sight. brue looked at his friend's sad face, reflected in the light of the fire. "she loved you very deeply, you know," he informed choi. "that's why she made me promise never to tell you about the child."
"because she knew i could never go through with it if i knew" he reasoned. choi felt the tears on his face as the flames leapt higher. "brue" he said finally after a long pause, "what was the last thing she said? i couldn't hear."
Brue looked at his friend and smiled ruefully. "it was my name." he said sadly
both the men stared at the funeral pyre for a while. "she loved you too" he said honestly. and both men felt a little more whole again.

four years after the assassination attempt at the palace, the choe clan regrouped in mongolia. put on guard by the attempt on his wife, the archfiend had soldiers scouring the entire penninsula for anyone who had ties to the wobong choe so it was not safe for them to linger there any longer.
pak jin jae greeted woo and hyang, now men with beards. there was a third man with them. he was well built and wore a pleasant smile. jin jae turned to the newcomer. "i am pak jin jae of the wobong choe clan" he said by way of introduction
the stranger replied, "i am Im Ho Gwun. no clan affiliation." jin jae asked what brought him to their gathering. "your cousins told me of your cause, and i wished to join. perhaps i can be of service" he answered.
jin jae welcomed him to their group. "woo, hyang, what news from the imperial city?" they began to discuss plans to destroy the archfiend.

it had not been a good two years for general du. despite his efforts to sustain the royal family with extra provisions smuggled to the island, they slowly died off, one by one, from illness or malnutrition. the archfiend had succeeded in removing any hope of restoring the imperial house of koryo.
to make matters worse, his sister had passed on as well unexpectedly from a bad bout of pneumonia. Chang bi was now bereft of both her parents. At the funeral, wearing the customary white robe and straw hat, he looked over at his niece. she was 21 now, and the last traces of childhood had vanished leaving behind the woman that he saw.
when the funeral rites were over, he went to her and told her, "chang bi, why don't you come live with me in the imperial city?"
she nodded. "thank you uncle" she replied gratefully. "i would like that very much."
