maybe we should put together an AOW in book form for those who missed part of the series or do not have it on tape...
anyway to continue...
The archfiend ushered Bu Yong into a chair with a few "ja ja ja"'s. She tried not to giggle. He seemed like an eager young boy with a big secret. Kneeling by her feet, he put his hands oh her folded ones and looked into her face silently. Blushing at being stared at for so long, bu yong asked, "what is this surprise?"
the archfiend paused to stroke her cheek gently with his fingers before he answered, "that as the wife of the imperial dragon, you are to be enstated as the empress of the new shilla dynasty."
Her eyes widened. "Sang Jang Goon! I don't know what to say!"
The archfiend smiled, the familiar wrinkles at the corners of his eyes turning upwards. "Don't say anything, just smile." He was suprised to see her drop her gaze and was even more surprised to see tears welling in her eyes. "Boo hin, what's the matter?"
sniffling, she wiped away the first of her tears and said quietly, "i have so much regret, for losing your baby, for leaving you..."
ui min stood up and hugged her. "do not regret anymore. you are here now. just promise to stay and grow old with me. And after we die, be buried by my side." she leaned her head on his shoulder and he stroked her back consolingly. "And" he added with a mischeivous look in his eye, "i am not so old that we cannot have more children together." He lovingly wiped the last of her tears and then leading her by the hand, they walked to his bedchambers.

The day of the coronation was a flawless spring day. ui min stood with duduel and looked at the crowds that had gathered. in an unprecedented gesture, after taking the necessary sercurity measures, the archfiend had announced that all who wished to share in the joy of the coronation would be allowed to attend. beyond the line of guards holding spears, a throng of people craned their necks in curiosity. Ui min turned to duduel. "The skies are cloudless and the flowers have begun to blossom. I take it the gods favor my actions?"
Duduel chuckled softly. "So you have learned to fear the Gods now?"
The archfiend shrugged sheepishly. "at my age i suppose one cannot afford not to." he gazed over the peasants flocking to the courtyard. "this day is for them, not myself." A shadow passed over his face. "Sunsah, do you really think that i can do this? to finally make the dream of the grand enterprise a reality?"
Duduel tipped his hat up slightly and looked up a flock of birds flying overhead. "So long as your heart is with the people, you cannot fail them."
Ui Min nodded. Choi Bu approached the two and saluted. "Hwang sang baeha, the coronation is about to start."
"geu leh geu leh" (yes of course) he responded. Following general choi, the archfiend went to be attired in his robes of state.
at the sound of the gongs, the people fell silent. The rows of ministers bowed together and in a fanfare of music, Ui min and Bu yong entered the courtyard. He was wearing the traditional coronation robes, modelled after the chinese style - the long broad hat with the beads hanging in front of his face. she also was similarly attired in the robes and headdress of the queen. The archfiend could not help but steal a sidelong glance at her -she looked every bit the empress. His sons, dressed in full armor followed behind him. Ji soon beamed proudly. Ji Young and Ji Kwang both uncharacteristically sober, behaved themselves accordingly. Murmurs went through the crowd. Seated on their thrones, ui min and bu yong listened as one of the ministers stood before them and read the coronation rites from a scroll parchment. When he had finished, Ui min knew that there were other ceromonial rites to be administered, but he felt that the coronation thus far still did not have any real meaning for the peasants gathered. Standing up suddenly, he walked to the front of the platform and shouted, "People of shilla! I accept the title of emperor not for myself, but for you. As the son of a simple salt merchant, I know how you all have suffered at the hands of the previous regime and i promise that today marks the end of such suffering!" The crowds were utterly silent. "Though i bear the title of emperor, i am a common man like yourselves, and it is my goal to ensure that a new golden age of peace and prosperity shall be shared by all!" The people erupted into cheers and shouts of "Hwang Sang Bae Ha Man Seh began reverberating throughout the crowd. Holding up his hands to ask for silence, Ui Min smiled broadly and said, "As a gift to you, my people , on this joyous occasion, every villager is to receive a sack of grain as a token of the prosperity to come!" The commoners fell to their knees, some of them weeping grateful tears. Over and over they cried, "Hwang sang bae ha! Seu oon ee mang geuk howeum ni da!" (your grace is immeasurable). The archfiend was flooded by a feeling of pure joy. Rising, he took his empress' hand and walked back into the palace amidst the cheers of the people.

Scene: Mountains in the remote countryside
Two dark figures entered the dark mouth of the small mountainside cave, barely visible by the light of their small torch. As they made their way further into the damp darkness, a voice called out, "Who's there?"
"U and Hyang" one of the figures responded.
A woman's figure emerged from the shadows. "cousins, i am glad that you arrived safely." she was tall for a woman, and though devoid of makeup and wearing nothing more than peasant garments, she radiated beauty.
"Cho Chun," Hyang asked, "Is it true that uncle Choong Su is also dead?"
Cho chun's eyes flashed with anger. "yes it's true. i had to retrieve his body after everyone had gone after that general du. had he not run off, i don't think i would have been able to take his body for burial." Her last words were spoken in a soft tone that contrasted sharply with her earlier vengeful one. "what about aunt song? and grandmother?"
U sighed. "We managed to hide them for now. grandmother is not doing well. father's and uncle's deaths are hard for her to bear."
Hyang turned to his cousin. "Cho Chun, are you allright?"
She was silent for a moment, then in a cold voice she answered, "I will not be allright until I cut Yi Ui Min's heart out and show it to him while it is still beating." Hyand and U grimaced at the thought - such an unladylike image. She walked some distance from them, her back to her cousins. "We must rebuild our clan and claim vengeance for the deaths of our fathers."
U smirked slightly. A woman was going to rebuild their clan? Though he loved his cousin, he found the notion completely ridiculous. "and how do you propose we do that?" he asked with a slight tone of bemusement.
Her voice floated out over the darkness. "We must find general Du and regroup what men we can, and find a means of recruiting others to our cause." U was surprised that she actually had some sort of plan worked out in her mind. "General Du", she continued, "was friends with the archfiend for a very long time. if anyone can help us destroy yi ui min, it's him." Her voice was laced with hatred. What her cousin brothers could not see were the tears streaming down her face. "I will kill him father", she thought to herself. "I will tear him into so many pieces that not even all the crows in koryo will be able to find every piece of his wretched carcass."

Scene: General Du's home a few weeks later...
General Du stood in the courtyard of his estate, lost in thought, absentmindedly throwing grain to his ornamental carp. He took no notice of their colorful backs rising up to the surface. The royal family had been exiled for a half year now and he had been unable to communicate with them at all.
"Du Deh Jang Goon!" Du turned to see a servant bowing.
"yes, what is it?"
"there is a young woman outside asking to see you, "he explained in a puzzled tone.
"who is she?" Du asked
"i am not sure my lord", the servant replied. "But, she said you would know her."
Equally puzzled, Du told the servant to see her inside.
As he walked up the steps to the pagoda where he drank his customary morning tea, he saw the woman standing, with her head bowed. Her clothes were old, but clean and the holes patched. Upon closer inspection he saw that they were once expensive. "general Du," she said in a soft voice, "thank you for granting me an audience."
Du walked over to his tea table and sat down. the woman kept her gaze on the floor. he gestured to the empty seat across from him. "Please, sit." She accepted his invitation but her eyes were still lowered. "You said to my servant that i would know you when i saw you, but if i have seen you before, I do not remember it. So who are you and what is it that you came for?"
The girl raised her head. Sitting with her back perfectly straight, her eyes were almost level with his. "Do you know the of Choe's of Wobong?" sha asked in a quiet but strong tone.
"The Choes of Woobong?" Du repeated. "Yes, of course. general choe chong hon and his brother choe choong su were both recently killed trying to kill the archfiend." He noticed that her demeaner did not change, but something in her eyes did.
She kept her eyes fixed on his. "I am choe cho chun, daughter of choe choong su and niece of choe choong hon of woobong. I come here to ask for you help in killing the archfiend"

(To continue...)
General Du, temporarily stunned, was silent. He would have laughed at this woman's request, but something about her told him she was both serious about her goal and capable of carrying it to fruition. Finally, he replied, "I am sorry for the deaths of your father and uncle, but what makes you think i would help you in killing Yi Ui Min?
Cho Chun's tone softened. "general du, you are a man of honor and principles. why would a man who swore loyalty to the royal family still be alive when the imperial house has been exiled?"
Her comment stung him. It was a question he had struggled with since his last meeting with the king. He was surprised to hear himself admit, "The king asked me to remain alive, in the hopes of aiding the people of this land."
Cho Chun knew he had admitted it without having planned to, that much she sensed. "general, we want the same thing, you and I. It is only the motivation fueling the goal that differs between us." When she saw she had caused him to consider what she said, she continued, "If Yi Ui Min is killed, you fulfill your original goal to the late king and you can bring the crown prince out of exile to reinstate him as emperor. In doing so, you would also help me revenge my family members' deaths."
General Du sighed. "I will consider what you ask."
She stood up to leave. "Thank you" she said quietly. "And general Du..." She stared at him intently. "Please do not make the mistake of making me your enemy." She descended the steps of the pagoda and disappeared from his sight.
Du wondered why this meeting had left him feeling so ill at ease. She had said the last sentence with the same tone as someone thanking another for meeting them. One thing he did know - she was not to be taken lightly.

Brue decided to take a walk outside the palace. It was too fine a morning to be spent indoors, and the archfiend was busy with the day's official business. As he was about to leave the gates, he overheard a woman's voice pleading, "Please! I must see the emperor. I will not take up much of his time! Please! It is a matter of life and death!" Brue followed the commotion. A girl was trying in vain to push her way past two of the yongho guards, but they blocked her way with their spears. She sank to the ground, crying, covering her face with her hands.
Brue walked up to the guards and asked, "What is going on?"
"This woman keeps pestering us to allow her an audience with the emperor. But all who seek an audience with the king must apply for it through the proper channels. She won't take no for an answer" one explained.
Looking at her crumpled form, Brue felt pity for the girl. "Here, I'll speak to her. The two of you carry on as you were." He led her away from the gate. "Please don't cry. Tell me why you wanted to see the king."
She wiped her tears, and somehow Brue found it very endearing. There was something childlike and innocent about how she did it. "i'm sorry for making a scene my lord, it's just that i don't know what else to do."
"tell me what is wrong" he asked kindly.
The girl took a moment to calm herself before speaking. "My father was a soldier in the imperial dragon's army. My family is from Kaelim and we believed in the righteous cause so my father enlisted out of a sense of duty. Not too long ago, he was training at Mt. Mita under kim sami and the yongho guards came and slaughtered many of the soldiers, including my father." She tried to stop her voice from shaking. "I have a grandmother, my only living relative. After my father died, poverty, we forced us to live in a cave in the mountainside. Sir, she is old and frail and deserves to live in some comfort before she passes away. I simply wanted to ask the king for a job - anything even if it meant cleaning stables. I just wanted to earn some money so that i could send it back to her." Again she began crying.
Touched by her filial devotion to her grandmother, Brue told her, "I can ask the emperor on your behalf if he would grant you an audience."
She looked at him with tearful eyes. "How? What good would it do? Don't i have to petition the king? I don't even know how to read or write!" She started to sob again.
Brue wanted to put a comforting hand on her shoulder but didn't want to offend the poor girl after she had shared her troubles with him. "My name is Brue. I am a close friend of the imperial dragon. If it helps you and your grandmother, I will ask him to see you as a personal favor."
A hint of a smile was visible on her face. "You would do that for me?" Brue nodded. "Oh thank you, sir!" She flung her arms around him and hugged him. Brue was stunned, but found that he was about to return in kind, when suddenly she pulled away, her face flaming. "i'm sorry my lord. i overstepped my bounds."
Brue laughed and saw her smile a little at the sound. "Tell me your name, since we are now on such familiar terms."
She blushed again. "Hae yon, sir", and she looked at Brue and smiled. He was completely unprepared for how happy it made him.
