Stood up for herself finally. I watched her scene with the Queen Mother three times, I was so happy to see her finally get a backbone. The same for Jang-geum, refusing to let her give up. All that standing in the rain crying and trying to do an end run around nasty people--Lady Han really needed JG to get her back on task, eh. When Lady Han was standing outside the king's pavilion and the Head Lady wouldn't let her in, I kept bouncing on the couch, saying, "Come on! You can do it! Go in there, you!" It was very frustrating. (Good thing I was the only one in the room to hear myself, too. I'm not too good at those internal monologues everyone on these shows seems to have. ) And notice, she said, " When I win the rematch," not if. Spunky. Bo

If anyone has the time to help me out here, it is greatly appreciated. i have every episode from #2 on tape. Now, this weekend's is the beginning of the tape, but when it's done, you NEED to see it. It's a keeper (i think it's the most i've seen Lady Jung smile in the whole show; a great tribute to Lady Jung, and i think the acting talents of the actress)

Thanks JP. I may take you up on that. I started taping them but I have this bad habit of missing the Sat/Sun episode. The Sat before I somehow recorded an Indian show instead. I must have been tired when I pogramed that one.

Of course, leave it to me to miss these two very important episodes. Did Lady Han lose the competition?

Of course, leave it to me to miss these two very important episodes. Did Lady Han lose the competition? Thank you, galacticchick, for actually responding to my post. Lady Han won, even though she did not show up for the Queen Mother's birthday party (Young-ro's uncle had Lady Han kidnapped) and Jang-geum had to do everything on her own and won on her own, with some help from her mother's secret recipe book. The king was totally impressed and told Jang-geum she was the "best kitchen lady of them all!" The QM was so taken aback that she said even though she favored Lady Choi (for showing up) she would make Lady Han head kitchen lady because she obviously was the greatest teacher of cooks. Lady Choi was furious, refused to leave the palace and fomented a rebellion with the other head kitchen ladies. She said the Queen Mother knew she'd made a mistake, and Lady Han was chosen without doing the competition, and besides, Lady Han was born to common people so who was she to tell all the noble ladies what to do? (Sir Choi was scared to death he'd lose all his monopolies, too, because Lady Han wouldn't put up with it.) Meantime, Lady Jung leaves the palace and dies while JG is taking care of her. JG takes care of the funeral and comes back to find Lady Han standing in the rain over a huge assemblage of radishes for kimchee, which none of the other kitchen ladies have sent help to prepare. JG immediately begins bossing Lady Han around and telling her to fulfill her duties and not take this nonsense. Lady Han sits around moping; finally, there is a celebration for the king's concubine where none of the other kitchens will pay tribute to the concubine because they want to embarrass Lady Han. The Big Head Lady goes to the Queen Mother and says, "See. Lady Han's no good. You should change your noble mind." She then tells Lady Choi that it's as good as done because even though the Queen Mother will consult with the Queen, who loves Lady Han and Jang-geum because of her nurse who Jang-geum took care of when she died (you remember--the special rice), the Queen has no power yet. But it seems Lady Han is going to resign out of frustration, until JG comes in and tells her off--she says, "You can't give up! You haven't even tried! Lady Jung didn't ask you to be comfortable or to have an easy time. She asked you to do a good job. If you quit now, I will never see or speak to you again because I won't be able to respect you as a mother figure or as a teacher." While the Queen Mother is meeting with the Queen (who is trying to talk her out of this), Lady Han comes in (I loved the QM--she was so gracious to Lady Han, as she is to everyone, even though she was thinking of axing her). The Queen asks what Lady Han would like. Lady Han asks the QM to restage the competition so she can win on her own, and when she wins, she wants complete control over the other kitchen ladies so she can subjugate them. (I liked how she said, "I will subjugate them!" ) And of course, we had the patented Jang-geum head flip at the end, when she hears that Lady Han has stood up for herself. If any of that's confusing, I'll be glad to clear it up. Bo

Before she died, she told Jang-geum to support Lady Han, and to not let her give up. Jang-geum did so rather forcefully at one point.

Yes, Lady Jung is dead. I think someone else mentioned that they did a nice little "tribute" to her at the end of the last episode we saw, showing scenes she had been in and how she'd affected people. Also, they did a little scene where Jang-geum and the girl who was Lady Jung's protege (I can never remember her name) remembered how they called Lady J "grandma" and how she made their lives easier as young brides (a term which always makes me feel slightly queasy). It was my pleasure, galacticchick. Sometimes it's almost as much fun to tell someone about something you watched as it is to actually watch it--which gives me a tiny window of sympathy into the spoiler psychology--but not enough to excuse it . Bo Soju - didn't you just laugh when JG told Lady Han to suck it up and bossed everyone around? It was like when she kicked Lady Choi out of the ambassador kitchen. I was delighted by the whole thing.
