I have been watching Royal Story for about a few months now, and I don't speak Korean and just watch the show. So since it is not subtitled in Chicago, I'm just going by guessig it. I can figure it out a little bit, but I would love it if anyone can give me a quick summary. I know that it involves, the king and the queen and than there are two other women (they are lower-rank than the queen). So does the queen have any kids or not. I know that both the two other ladies (sooki-mama and sejal's mom) have kids but what about the queen. Also why was the queen ousted out of the palace before, and what is wrong with her. She always seems to be sick, so I'm confuse. I saw yesterday episode and I think that sooki-mama made a deal with sejal's mom, ...what was it about. Also is Sejal( I guess he is the king next in line) married, because he is always with another young girl. Why does Sejal's mom have some much power, even though the other two ladies know that she is evil. Can't they tell the king? Please somebody help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

the story of king sukjong, queen inhyon and lady jang is a very famous story. there is a book on virtuous women and this story is in it.
king sukjong is married to queen inhyon, so she is the principal queen of noble background and breeding. however the king is in love with lady chang, a lower born lady. somehow two factions, the noran and soran are involved one supports queen inhyon the other supports lady jang
in any case, the king is in love with lady jang so he makes her his second queen. she gets pregnant and bears him a son - the next in line to the throne. queen inhyon for some reason (either the king never slept with her or she is sterile) does not bear any children, so this puts lady jang in a position of power.
lady chang is extremely jealous of the kings affections. she schemes to have queen inhyon ousted from the court and is eventually successful, but she later returns to be choom chun (principal queen) and lady chang is bumped back to hui been (second queen)
the king then marries a third lady, a girl who serves in the palace and of course lady jang hates her and tries to beat her up. her relationship with the king starts really going downhill at this point
the third wife gets pregnant and bears a son (the actual future king as the sone of jang hui been dies early)
finally, lady chang gets so jealous of queen inhyon that she hires a mudang (female shamen) to practice black magic against her, and queen inhyon falls mysteriously ill and dies.
the king finds out about her plotting and lady chang is ordered to death by drinking poison
in the version i saw many years ago, she refused to drink it and they had to pry her mouth open with a spoon to get her to swallow it.

Just gave this a bump because we discussed this during Dong Yi and i just found the thread though it seems to be missing some posts like from the long departed chock o pie . Interesting this post is 9 years old .
Back than Bo was a guest as described characters as "Historical type people "(sorry Bo had to laugh )
What is amazing is back than most of the dramas were not subbed and so many non Korean speakers still watched them . Anyway saw DVD set of this almost picked it up as it was very cheap but no subs .That's sort of why i bought this thread back . Kudo's to all the brave souls who sat through Yeoin Cheonha /Ladies of The Palace ..200 eps no subs and id watch it too .

LOL, I wasn't a guest, I was a moderator. However, at that time, we allowed posting from non-signed-in persons, so if one of us just wanted to post something very quickly, we wouldn't bother to sign in for it.
PS - You were supposed to laugh! LOL. It was a joke. I don't think I ever got to see Jang Hee Bin, either. Doesn't "Bin" mean she was a concubine?

I did laugh i thought it was hilarious in fact that term is stuck in my mind . There is another thread on this on other shows where someone compares Royal Story to the Young and The Useless ..sorry Young And The Restless ...the word "saucy" was even used . God the posts were funny but enough to make sure id give it a wide birth . Amazing thing was all these people watching these dramas with no subs ..very few brave souls will do that now ,save Korean Speakers like Truth ...Mugwump will watch an unsubbed drama and she is not Korean . Back to "saucy" i found some comments on Jang Gil San a particular favorite of mine ...anyway viewers of yore were shocked at the amount of flesh on display ...ok Han Go Eun displays bare shoulder and cleavage nothing worse than a low cut dress at the Academy Awards and the title character is seen in a loin cloth cue Slave Hunters ....woo hoo we have come a long way from the dark old days of 2003/4 . www.koreandrama.org/?p=9386Think you are right on Bin ,i have noticed that term used for concubines in Historical's .

Ahh, thanks to both of you. So that clears up some of my confusion when watching Yi San, too, as the concubines seemed to be named Won Bin and Hee Bin and etc. Bin, and I didn't catch that the title "Bin" would be modified by a rank.

Not all ranks have "Bin" in the title. The reason you see "Bin" a lot is because that's the highest rank. A concubine that reached the rank of "Bin" would, more than likely, be someone worth mentioning in a K-Drama. The link below lists all the ranks. Joseon Concubine Ranks

Dang. More information. LOL... (thanks)
My favorite line in this article: "There is a lavish ceremony and everyone involved has very big hair."
