Many of us recognize the young female archetypes from the Archies comic franchise that we grew up with. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest especially in the Betty and Veronica characters as archetypes of the modern, young woman. Of course, we OMR fans have our lead young female protagonist, Hye Ran, who I would argue has been more of a "Betty" type--the nice girl who often takes the fall (bordering on being a doormat) and consequently, doesn't always get the man, as opposed to the aggressive, slightly more malicious "Veronica" type who always gets what she wants. But that is not the end of the story, now that Hye-Ran is back from her de-facto exile, it'll be interesting to see if her character undergoes any personality shifts, if we're gonna see her fight more for what she really wants.

As long as she's not that girl Jughead hung around with ;D uh, seeing it from Jughead's POV, heheheh...I wouldn't exactly say he hangs out with her...more like he's hoping not to share the same planet with her...heheheheh

Soju, are you talking about Big Ethel? Hahaha! Interesting when juxtaposing our favorite modern K-drama OMR with that slice of American pop culture known as the Archies. I totally forgot about Big Ethel, but now that you mention it, my vote for the Jughead and Big Ethel parallel couple in OMR goes to Soon-ok and Tae-ho! ;D (admittedly, with better romantic prospects. ). If Hye-ran were our Betty, then Hyun-kyu would have to be our Archie--a fun-loving, free-spirited young guy who just wants to live and love, albeit without singing in a K-pop band! ;D This has implications, e.g. does that mean his new "arranged" girlfriend has "Veronica" potential? I hope so... Hye-ran's Betty act goes altogether with her family--the Park family is not totally unlike the Coopers--simple, hardworking, everyday folk, although Tae-il does have a darker past that would not be appropriate for a beloved American "family" comic strip. Last, but not least, my vote for the OMR Mr. Weatherbee and Mrs. Grundy "teachers" award goes to, whoelse, Dong-pyo and Mal-bong!

Soon-ok is prettier than Big Ethel, but Tae-ho certainly bears a strong resemblance to the jugheaded one! They run parallel in the brain power contest. Very good. Bo

Since we're talking about Archie characters, I also think that HS and YK resemble Moose & Midge (although HS is probably not as dumb as Moose).

Yeah we've talked a bit about how YK and HS are so cartoonish. I think Lucy mentioned in another thread how they resemble the CareBears in their matching coral jammies. Bo also mentioned that HS just needs to lie on top of YK to make her pregnant, a very cartoony prospect (very vintage comics a la storks delivering babies, pre-manga times ;D).
