I'm sure I'm late to the table with this, but there's a great (2-part) explanation at Korean Wiz of many of the customs we're discussing. I just noticed it. Y'all might want to take a look. www.koreanwiz.org/understand.htmlI especially liked the section entitled "Easy Money" Bo

Bo, I remember seeing this on the KoreanWiz site a few years back, but I'd all but forgotten about it. It's such a great summary, thanks for reminding us all about it.
As for the “Easy Money,” a ONE MILLION WON reward sounds like a fortune, but in American dollars, isn’t that something like $820? Phooey! (not that I’d turn it down, though).

A coule of times recently, the subtitles have used the expression "Penny for your thoughts." In Korean, this must be "Twelve Won for your thoughts."
