Since it's the end of the year I thought it'd be a good idea to post some of my drama favorites from this year. Feel free to share yours as well. Since my favorite drama is from SBS, I'm not sure who (if anyone) here has seen it so I posted some info about it.
Favorite drama: SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae (1,000 Year Love)
Starring: So Ji Sup, Sung Yuri, Kim Nam Jin, Kim Sa Rang

SBS 'Chun Nyun Ji Ae' (1,000 Year Love, also called 'Loving For A Thousand Years') is a 20 episode miniseries about a Bekjae princess, Boo Yuh Joo (Sung Yuri), from 660. After the guy she loves, Ari (a high general in the Bekjae army, role played by So Ji Sup), is killed by a Shilla spy, Kim Yoo Suk (Kim Nam Jin), she attempts to kill herself by jumping off a cliff but ends up traveling in time to present day 2003 where she's re-united with Ari (now called Kang In Chul). In 2003, Kang In Chul (role also played by So Ji Sup) is a clothes designer. In the present, she also meets Tasuji (role also played by Kim Nam Jin), a descendant of Kim Yoo Suk, who falls in love with Boo Yuh Joo. It's because of Tasuji, and his kindness towards her, that the princess comes to forgive Kim Yoo Suk for what he did in 660. In the end, even though she falls in love with Kang In Chul (all over again), the princess returns to the past and is taken to Shilla by Kim Yoo Suk.
Regarding the drama:
Chun Nyun Ji Ae aired in Korea from March 22nd to May 25th. One of the things that impressed me about this drama is that although the story is based around fictional characters and only 3 episodes have scenes set in 660, which make up about 100 minutes worth of the drama (there are flashbacks and references made to the past in other episodes) , there's an emphasis to keep things as accurate as possible. Also, Ari is probably the best and most liked character in this drama and he dies in the 2nd episode. His death, although quite sad, doesn’t hurt the drama though. It just helps to set up what happens next.
Regarding the cast:
So Ji Sup and Kim Nam Jin are both very good in this drama (in both of their roles). This is the first time I see So Ji Sup act and he left me with a very good impression. He also worked in SBS Glass Slippers, he supposedly was good in that one also, so I'm thinking about watching that. Kim Nam Jin mostly does movies so it was interesting to see him in a drama. He also left me with a good impression. Sung Yuri's acting is still a work in progress but you forgive her because the flaws in her acting come from lack of experience, not lack of effort. She's a singer turned actress and the 4 dramas she's worked in (up until now) have all been short and only total 42 episodes combined. She definitely has potential though, which she shows in scenes like when So Ji Sup dies in the past and when she first sees Kim Nam Jin in the present, and seems to be getting better each time she's on screen.

Chun Nyun Ji Ae is by far my favorite drama of the year. I liked it so much that I bought the soundtrack (which is very good). It's become my second favorite drama of all time after Winter Love Song/Story. Coming a distant second would be the 14 episode MBC miniseries 'Damo'. I have to say that the last couple of years the majority of my favorite dramas have been miniseries. Mostly because longer dramas tend to get dull. Episodes get repetitive and nothing major happens for 10-15 episodes at a time. Something is always happening in each episode of a miniseries because they're much shorter and more to the point. While storylines in a miniseries do go faster than longer dramas some, like Chun Nyun Ji Ae, don't feel rushed at all and, even with a limited number of episodes, are able to tell a good story.
On a side note, I think that MBC Damo and SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae are a new breed of historical dramas. History plays a key role in both these dramas but they're based around fictional characters with younger casts. The difference between them being that the storyline in Chun Nyun Ji Ae moves from the past to the present while Damo is just set in the past. While historical dramas are popular in Korea, they don’t do so well (ratings wise) with the younger generation. I think that's why the makers of these dramas wanted to take a different approach and made these 2 fantasy dramas with history tied into the storyline. They both got very good ratings in Korea so there will probably be more dramas that follow their example in the future.
Favorite actor in a drama: So Ji Sup (SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae) - He was good as Ari and Kang In Chul in CNJA.
Honorable mention: Kim Nam Jin (SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae), Choi Su Jung (KBS On The Green Prairie), Cha Seung Won (KBS Bodyguard), Kwon Sang Woo (SBS Into The Sun), Lee Suh Jin (MBC Damo), Kim Min Joon (MBC Damo), Kim Ho Jin (KBS Yellow Hankerchief)
Favorite actress in a drama: Ha Ji Won (MBC Damo) - She was really good as Jang Chae-ok, a female detective during the Chosun dynasty, in Damo. I also liked Sung Yuri in SBS CNJA but Ha Ji Won gave the better acting performance of the two. KBS Wife and SBS The Perfect Girl were disappointments but Uhm Jung Hwa (Hyun-ja) and Park Han Byul stood out in their respective roles.
Honorable mention: Sung Yuri (SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae, Kim Sung Joon meets Lee Yoo Jung), Uhm Jung Hwa (KBS Wife), Chae Rim (KBS On The Green Prairie), Jung Sun Kyung (KBS The Age of Warriors), Park Han Byul (SBS The Perfect Girl), Myong Sae Bin (SBS Into The Sun), Lee Tae Ran (KBS Yellow Hankerchief), Lee Yuri (KBS Yellow Hankerchief), Han Go Eun (KBS Bodyguard)
Favorite character in a drama: Ari (role played by So Ji Sup, SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae) - He's only in the first 2 episodes of the drama but nonetheless a great character.
Favorite character in a drama: Boo Yuh Joo (role played by Sung Yuri, SBS Chun Nyun Ji Ae) - I really liked Yuri in this drama. She's already quite popular and, at the young age of 22, she’s already become of the better paid actresses in Korea so all she has to do is work on her acting and she’s going to be huge.
