There's one final thing I wanted to do here. Wish I'd thought of doing this a long time ago because it can be interesting: charting the ratings and seeing how they changed over the course of a series.
Wikipedia has some mostly complete data on KKW national ratings. They don't include streaming views so the picture isn't complete, but they still turn out to be revealing. I made three charts.
These are the total numbers of viewers for every episode except 12, 13 and 14 which are unavailable for some reason. A few things we can see. One, more people tended to watch on Sundays (even-numbered episodes) than on Saturdays (odd-numbered episodes). Two, that very clear dip in episode 19, that happens to be the first full episode after things suddenly turned fictional and stupid. And three, while the numbers did bounce back for episode 20, clearly the fictional period wasn't successful as far as growing the audience.
This one shows the audience share for all of the episodes. That is, what percentage of the people watching TV at that time were watching KKW. You can see good growth over the first ten episodes (some of which was due to popular competition ending) . Then a flat period. The first part of it was probably due to the Christmas holidays; remember that for two weeks there was only one episode per week (13 and 14) and messing up a schedule hurts ratings, on top of the holiday season.
For this one I got rid of the Saturday/Sunday bumpiness by averaging the weekend pairs together. That's except for 13 and 14 which were the only episodes for their weeks. It's disappointing to see that the fiction period didn't do worse, but it sure does look like it was the weakest part of the series as far as the audience not growing at all. Not sure why the sudden big jump for 27 and 28, but the bottom line is that the final four episodes, after the fiction period, were the most watched. Certainly people were curious to see the big final battle, but wow after 17-18 the series didn't rebound until 25-26.
Hopefully the people at KBS take these numbers as a lesson not to let the next series get damaged like this one was.
