Could be a long wait for this one--they still haven't posted the Portuguese subs for 23 yet. Not sure if they do the subs one at a time or if they'll go ahead with English regardless of the others.
Anyway I'll be out this afternoon so I'll watch the episode tonight.

English subs came out early this time. It came out on 1pm EST on my end.
I think this is the first role I’ve seen Choi Soo Jong in in which the character he plays is not a good fighter. Dunno if he’s played characters like that in historicals before (I presume he has) but after seeing him as a warrior in past roles, it’s kind of amusing

Sure is a lot of “strike me down” as a goading method to get the other party to back down.
It’s not exclusive to this show but there is alot of it

This one started out with potential. A new setting, some new characters, and seeing Jurchens for the first time. Not all historically accurate, with the Kim Eunbu stuff, but it felt closer to getting things on track again. But no, pretty soon it was back to the head writer’s ego calling the shots. Sigh. Let’s get this out of the way first. The stuff with The Black Assassin has gotten out of hand. (click for full size) No pun intended...well okay it was intended..but ugh now we even got a heaping helping of evil laughter that would have done Wakizaka proud in IYSS. Good actor, playing his part well, but do we really need another villain when you have a barbaric enemy nation invading the country over and over again and killing lots of innocent people? What I said last time about the head writer being out of control, yeah exactly that right here. Besides, Kim Hoon and Choi Jil complaining because Hyeonjong doesn’t respect them, Hyeonjong made them both generals and gave them promotions! And then suddenly after a time jump (which came out of nowhere, very poorly handled by the writers), suddenly Choi wants to be the new Kang Jo. What changed his mind? It doesn’t even make sense. (click for full size) Then why aren’t you carrying a truce flag, Einstein? Geez you could have gotten yourself killed. Duh. Lady Kim’s court lady: “Ever since the olden days, men have known nothing unless they were told.” You’d think I’d be highly offended by that...but no I won’t argue with her! Had to pause the stream from laughing so hard. The whole confrontation scene with Gamchan and those troops, really, all of those soldiers wildly celebrating because one of them beat a guy in his late 60s? It was embarrassing. And then the new angry deputy general completely turns into a quivering little bunny, that was simply bad writing. Nice moments with Hyeonjong and Lady Kim, that maybe was the best stuff in the episode. But once again, the empress shows up at the perfect wrong time and stomps away scowling. Yet again. And now she’s threatening murder? Even the Black Assassin isn’t enough villain content, we have to have The Rainbow Assassiness? Oh good grief. (click for full size) Dude, he’s almost 70! Give the guy a break. And come on, he shouldn’t be right out there in the middle of it all anyway. And he wouldn’t have been, this was silly. ■ In October of 1014, Khitan invaded Goryeo again. However, thanks to the fierce fight of General Jung Sin Young of Heunghwajin, Goryeo was able to drive out Khitan once again. But by increasing the number of soldiers, and repairing the damages of war, the nation grew financially poorer. A rare narrated text. These are always welcome. However, according to Wikipedia the Khitan mounted attacks in 1015, 1016 and 1017 but it says nothing about 1014. Did they get this wrong? Once again, sorry if this all sounds so negative but I just keep feeling disappointment that the series has strayed so far from such a strong start. Even the quality of the fiction that's being pushed into the story has fallen off.

I think the English Wikipedia is lacking information. Khitan attack did happen in 1014 and was defeated by Jeong Shinyong at Heunghwajin just like the narration said. A new setting, some new characters, and seeing Jurchens for the first time. Regarding new characters : Do Yongsu, Lee Hyeon, Arita are fictional characters. Your character roster says "Cho Eul Du," but that would be a Korean pronunciation of the name. Chu Yidou would be the Chinese pronunciation of the name and probably more accurate since the Chinese claim the Jurchens as their history and one of their ethnicities. However, this person and his tribe lived in an area that is now part of North Korea and many of the Jurchen tribes in this region eventually became Koreans after being conquered by Goryeo in the 1360s, so maybe it might not be too far off to call him with the Korean name. The actor playing Lee Jarim is the son of the actor who played Choi Seungwoo in Emperor Wang Guhn.

OK well that's good news, I'm glad the series was accurate on that attack. With what's been happening in recent episodes it's hard not to question every single thing.
I'll add the Chu Yidou name to the roster. The subtitles had it the other way (yes they actually gave us a subbed name for once) so I'll leave that one too, for the benefit of anybody who was looking based on the subs.
I did wonder about the location of the Jurchen scenes, how far northeast. This is where a map would have been a great addition. This business about the series not giving us basic maps, it's getting irritating.

I'll add the Chu Yidou name to the roster. The subtitles had it the other way (yes they actually gave us a subbed name for once) so I'll leave that one too, for the benefit of anybody who was looking based on the subs. The most accurate version would be the Manchurian name(Jurchens changed their name to Manchurians during Qing Dynasty), but there are only about 1000 Manchurian speakers left now as most Manchurians assimilated with the Han Chinese so there isn't a way for me to figure out the original Manchurian name. I copied and pasted the Chinese characters of the historical person on Google Translate to find out the Chinese pronunciation of the name. There isn't a Manchurian option on Google Translate. I did wonder about the location of the Jurchen scenes, how far northeast. This is where a map would have been a great addition. My mistake about Goryeo taking over the region in 1107. The correct time period would be 1360s. Orange area behind the walls(Goryeo-Jurchen border) in this map was part of Goryeo before Mongol invasion, but was conquered by the Mongols in 1258. It was taken back during King Gongmin's reign in 1356. The white dot in this area is where Kang Gamchan and Lee Jarim were stationed in Episode 24. The rest of the orange area in the map was conquered by Goryeo between 1360 and 1370. Rest of the Korean peninsula(not in green or orange) was conquered by Kim Jongseo during the reign of King Sejong(Joseon) in 1433. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kim_Jong-seo_(general)Jurchens lived in this region before Goryeo and Joseon's conquest. Some of them moved to Manchuria afterwards while the rest of the Jurchens who stayed eventually assimilated to become Koreans. Many descendants of the Jurchens in this episode most likely became Koreans hundreds of years later so maybe it isn't too far off to call the Jurchen names in this drama with Korean version of the name? I guess the Jurchens from Manchuria should definitely be called with the Chinese pronunciation of the name since their descendants are all Chinese today, but we can be lenient with the Jurchens who lived in today's North Korea.

What a good map! We need to get you on the production team for the series! Really, wny is it so hard for them to give us a proper map like this. It helps so much when the viewers can orient themselves and get a sense of where the different things are happening.
Thanks for digging that up, it's a great addition to the board.
It even shows the wall that was built later on, from Uiju in the west to Hwaju in the east.

Anyone notice that the armor the Jurchens were wearing were what the Khitan footsoldiers wore in IE? They're also wearing the same hair braids that the Khitans were wearing in IE instead of having the proper Jurchen/Manchu hairstyle. I guess they didn't want to make a new wig just for a minor battle scene.

There’s no episode 25 this weekend because of the Chinese/Lunar New Year, right?
