They really are getting quick with the subs! Episode 23 is up already on Kocowa, with subs.
As usual, if you're not a subscriber then you have 24 hours to watch it before they put it behind their paywall. (It does get posted on Dramacool if you need to go that route.)

My bad--the English title is up, but the episode itself isn't subbed yet. I'll keep checking....

Must say, the subs are strangely late after the past few weeks of arriving in a timely manner. The latest it’s ever arrived is 4pm.
I wonder if there’s behind the scenes trouble

Yeah it's 4:15 now and still nothing...and I have some things that need doing. I'll watch it tonight and get the comments up ASAP. Can't wait any longer for now.

7:16pm as I type this and no subs. That’s a record.
I don’t think I’m far off when I suspected behind the scenes troubles with the subtitling team, though if there is, what exactly the issue is is the question. Lost files? Members unable to do translation work?
I think this is a first. Where we go nearly an entire day without Kocowa subs. Such a thing didn't happen when LBW was airing.

Yeah absolutely not, no issues whatsoever then. And there definitely was a quicker turnaround in recent weeks. This is very odd.
8:30 and still nothing.

10:00 and we finally have the English subs. They're not finished--still haven't added the Spanish or Portuguese--but we're good to go.

Well this one sure was not worth the wait. An uninspired episode with some sloppy, lazy writing and plot holes, mostly centered around something that we know didn’t happen the way it was shown. Right from the beginning...we know Kim Eunbu isn’t going to die but they start us off with the heart-jerking misery and the daughter’s pain like it’s going to happen. And even the speech from Gamchan afterwards, very routine stuff. Yawn. (click for full size) Yeah you and me both! Where did this escape business come from, all out of nowhere, and how did all of those Balhae people suddenly show up without any explanation, and how did they get so far outside of Shangjing so quickly with no problem at all? Kim Eunbu would be watched closely after what happened before. And then all of those other guys died fighting but Ha Gongjin lets himself be captured alive? No he wouldn’t. At least they gave him a hero’s death, fair enough on that. Again with The Black Assassin, same thing, pour them tea and mess with their heads. Been there, done that. And of course a chase scene, when all else fails and you have no ideas, toss in a chase scene. Why does Gamchan have to be the one to rush to Heunghwajin? As opposed to, say, a military messenger with experience traveling that route on horseback at top speed who could get there much faster? Ugh! Stop this! And why aren’t the Khitan envoys being escorted all the way to the border? Once they clear the capital they’re on their own? They’d still be in great danger of attack by an angry populace all the way to the border. It would not happen this way. (click for full size) My favorite moment of the episode. XP laughs at the enemy and has the cojones to cross the river alone. What a terrific character. “After beheading the envoys, the Goryeo army will cross the Yalu River and advance. With that, Khitan will have to fight two wars.” I was wondering when somebody would suggest that. Well played Gamchan. “They do fear us. If they did not fear us, they would not have invaded us.” That makes no sense at all. Is anybody overseeing the writing anymore? Wow. Oh and of course we just had to get a glimpse of the empress showing up at the perfect wrong moment and looking pissed off. Sigh. Been there, done that. No offense intended to anybody, but wow Hyeonjong’s pajamas were ugly. The stuff didn’t go together. I mean, I sleep in stuff that doesn’t go together but I’m not a freaking emperor. (click for full size) The other nice moment of the episode. You can always count on smiling when those two are together. She’s putting him down but you can tell she’s proud of him, just can’t bring herself to say so. That actress was a terrific casting choice. Hate to sound so negative about this one but it sure was a disappointment. Looked like the series was getting itself righted but we’re back to the head writer’s ego getting out of control. And the fiction he shoved into this one wasn’t even as good as his previous fiction.

Kim Eunbu would be watched closely after what happened before. It should've been Ha Gongjin who got caught trying to flee, not Kim Eunbu. Kim Eunbu was sent home without any trouble in real history, but was captured by the Jurchens on the way. At least they gave him a hero’s death, fair enough on that. How he died in this episode is historically accurate. According to historical record, the Khitans cut Ha Gongjin's heart and liver out and ate them. And why aren’t the Khitan envoys being escorted all the way to the border? Once they clear the capital they’re on their own? They’d still be in great danger of attack by an angry populace all the way to the border. It would not happen this way. Goryeo did not detain a Khitan envoy in 1011, which is the year in this episode. They did detain a Khitan envoy in 1015 though.

According to historical record, the Khitans cut Ha Gongjin's heart and liver out and ate them. I wondered about that, thank you. It did seem like the kind of thing that was too outrageous to just make up and throw in the story. They did mention the liver, wonder why they left out the heart...I don't wonder why they spared us the eating. Can you imagine the reaction? Of course we did get Geum-kang and the eyeball...but that was his choice, I guess that's the difference.
