The king says he wants to reward “those who helped with the prince’s birth.” And then he gives things to officials? Ummm what about the women that helped with the actual birth? Shouldn’t they get something too? “It’s from the Astrology Office, sire.” Oh good grief no. And it’s about burying the new baby’s placenta…and it’s customary to let it sit for five months first? Was that a real thing back then? Wow. “You must bathe him downwards for three days and upwards for three days…so that his skin will even out.” Okay this is getting so weird. Love the queen mother laying the smackdown on the mistress! All right kiddo, stop the shrieking, it was only on your legs. You’re in no mortal danger. The best moment of the episode was the loser brother suddenly becoming a human being. Or at least us seeing it for the first time. His remembering about he and his sister sick with measles and not having medicine or even food, and then his comforting his sister from her worries, gee it almost made you like the guy, or at least have a little empathy for him. That was a very nice piece of writing. I wish more historicals would do that sort of thing. It helps make characters more complete and interesting. (click for full size) You’re trying to keep the baby safe from the epidemic? There are at least nine people in that room! Sheesh. ■ Princess Hwa-yup passed away at the beautiful age of 20. The death of Princess Hwa-yup leaves Yeongjo bereft of one son and seven daughters. And the sorrow oF Queen Sun-hee now only left with Prince Sado and Princess Hwa-wan out of her one son and six daughters goes beyond words. Princess Hwa-pyung whom he loved dearly. Princess Hwa-yup whom he disfavored greatly. They answer to his love and hatred by giving him the grief of losing a child. Loser brother’s wife, to her mother-in-law: “You shouldn’t wish ill fortune of others. If you make someone cry, it won’t be tears but blood that you tear from your eyes. You shouldn’t think that the heavens aren’t watching over you because it’s far away. It sees everything. it hears everything. It never lets you get away with anything.” That was another good moment, especially because it came from a simple housewife in the countryside. You feel more for her now just like with her husband. “I wish to give birth to a princess, your majesty. A princess exactly like Princess Hwa-pyung.” Boy she can really lay it on thick. You wonder if Youngjo is really so short-sighted that he can’t see when someone who wants something for him is trying to play him. Maybe he doesn’t think a woman can do that or would do that…or when it comes to a mistress maybe he’s just not thinking with his brain…either way it’s kind of surprising.

“It’s from the Astrology Office, sire.” Oh good grief no. And it’s about burying the new baby’s placenta…and it’s customary to let it sit for five months first? Was that a real thing back then? Wow. Yep, it's real. Apparently its purpose it to grant long life to the placenta's owner.
“You must bathe him downwards for three days and upwards for three days…so that his skin will even out.” Okay this is getting so weird. Common pregnancy lore, according to the writer (he references this and more in other shows too). I didn't even recognize before but the writer uses these same lines in his other shows too. I wonder if they're just common old sayings?

I should have Googled that placenta business first. There's all kinds of unusual stuff all over the planet about the subject.
