Continues to be a good story told at a nice relaxed pace. Just some odd stuff in this one, mostly towards the end. “It’s all because of party strife.” A shame that he didn’t conclude it was because he treated the other two kids so shabbily. Not any more correct but it might have done some good. Okay we get it, there’s lightning outside. We get it. ■ The most natural succession to the throne would be when the incumbent king dies or if something should happen to the king. Even if it was between father and son, there was always the risk of being accused of treason for disloyalty or injustice. If it wasn’t a natural succession to the throne, the place of King always brought massive bloodshed on his family members. “You owe me. So please retrieve the order.” Enjoyed that, his mother still being around and giving him the business a little to get him straight. I don’t remember when she dies, but it will be interesting to see if her death is bad timing and contributes to Youngjo getting more out of control. It sure would make sense. ■ It is recorded in history that Youngjo finally met the prince at five [a.m.]. Winter rain was pouring. The prince pleaded, crying, and former and incumbent members of the court along with officials of all government posts implored for a retrieval of the king’s order. Thus the king retrieved his order and placed the prince as substitute instead. (click for full size) The vomiting girl in front of her, and her son looking all sheepish, you could practically see the gears turning in her head. That was funny. So the tumbling nanny couldn’t bring herself to throw the knife. Why not? What was different about this time? Hope there’s a point to all this. As in, a useful point. Fortunately it’s just one brief scene per episode lately. Why the sudden freakout by the prince for no reason whatsoever? If he’s developing panic problems, well sure how could he not, it’s a classic situation for it. But not completely at random. They’ve doing this with Youngjo too and I don’t like it. There has to be a trigger. (click for full size) Umm...didn’t he basically rape her? What’s she so happy about? She certainly was unhappy enough when we first saw her. Or is she just faking being pregnant to scam him. So here’s something that stunned me. There was a comment in this episode about how Sado wasn’t 20 years old yet. Which was concerning because I immediately thought that Im Ho is way too old to be playing a 19-year-old and maybe we weren’t getting a realistic idea of the prince. Then I looked up the birth of Sado’s first kid, which we saw in this episode; turns out it happened when both mother and father were just 15. Well what are they doing casting Im Ho to play a 15-year-old here, right? But then I looked up his bio, and it turns out he’s only 16 when this was filmed! Doesh't seem way, way beyond 16? It seems impossible, I kept checking other sources because I didn’t believe it. And the actress playing Hyegyeong? Well when this was filmed she’s actually 30! Who would look at those two and say there’s fourteen years between them. Or is it just me. Wow.

Im Ho was 28 when this was filmed (birth year 1970), they really are just too old for their roles.

OK that makes much more sense, I kept finding him listed with a birth year of 1982 (even on Wikipedia--I'm going to correcct his entry). It seemed inconceivable that he would have been 16.
But that still leaves the point about him being too old. A very good point.

You ever notice how quiet 90s dramas sound in comparison to the later ones?

You ever notice how quiet 90s dramas sound in comparison to the later ones? The lack of BGM, you mean?

Yes I've noticed this and so far am enjoying it. A story can be told quietly and still be effective. Some of the more recent shows, even the better ones with good music in them, there can be too much of a good thing at times and it can become a lazy substitute for good storytelling. (LBKT for instance, those pounding drums all the time, it got to be ridiculous.)
Maybe part of the reason for it is that it wasn't as easy to produce a lot of custom music as quickly as you can these days with computers. Before computers were good at it, people had to sit there and write out every part by hand individually. When I was in college I did a simple arrangement for a middle school group and it took freaking forever to write out the parts, I couldn't believe how time-consuming it was. Nowadays you get an idea, just play it on a keyboard and software will turn it into printed music easily, for whatever instrument you want. I don't know the timing of it exactly, but this series was 1998 and I don't remember if computers were good transcribers at that time.
