■ The 21st King of Chosun, King Youngjo, agonizes over the low status of his mother and accusations that he poisoned his own brother, King Gyeongjong, all throughout his life. As Prince Sado asks Youngjo about the alleged poisoning of his uncle, the conflict between father and son grown more tense and Youngjo bans him [from visiting] Princess Hwapyung, which deepens the rift between them. Meanwhile, a court lady with the family name Moon aspires to give birth to a prince, and asks her scoundrel brother Moon Sung-gook to associate with palace officials.
If five royals and their combined staffs can’t figure out any kind of a lookout system to watch for the king…then they deserve that mess they got. How could he sneak up on them like that? He wasn’t exactly leading a commando team. And doesn’t that building have a back door they can sneak out of? Maybe something like what we saw in this scene really did happen, but this version of it sure seemed weak.
The two court ladies gushing about what a hunk Youngjo is...Must be the power-is-an-aphrodisiac thing, what possible other explanation is there?
Official Min has the title of "Belly Captain"? What the heck is a belly captain? Is he a navel officer?
Ahhh, we’re three episodes in and already they’re using the big-sticks-on-the-legs torture. How about that.
■ The name, Han Soo-kyu, that Lady Hyegyeong hears from the prince makes her nervous. But it was understandable that the prince accepted the opposition view of Han Soo-kyu of the Shimin Massacre out of revolt against his father who never showed him love. But the consequences were terrible.
OK now what the heck is going on here. Not sure I have this right. The weird fortuneteller dude who can do multiple consecutive backsprings and a flying 360º forward flip from a standing position (and land almost as softly as a hummingbird) is actually the fiftysomething or maybe even sixtysomething Nanny Han. And she wields a mean sword too. And apparently she had been going at it hot and heavy with that troublemaking official Kim Il-gyum (the guy behind the assassination attempt that opened the first episode, that was him in her sex fantasy vision), and so it was her personal connection to Kim that has her all bitter and warped and seeking some sort of vengeance. Is that it? Oh dear this better not turn into a running part of the story. There’s no need for this kind of silliness.
“I came to make up for it.” Yes he did. At least he has some ability to reflect on his dysfunctional behavior. So all is not lost.
So already we have a whole bunch of women who either have been stepped on and treated badly or else are nursing some sort of angry grudge. It’s like EWG all over again!
