For heaven’s sake just let him bow and get it over with. Bow back if you feel like it. Ugh.
Kyun-hwon: “You are the only king of the three kingdoms. The contention for mastery is over. Your world has come.” How hard must it have been for him to say that.
Gotta say it again--Shin-guhm is looking and acting nothing like the boob he used to be.
Oh good grief that Shilla prince is still moaning and groaning. “Order your subjects to take their own lives.” What a load that guy is.
“Shilla is done...The regime of one thousand years will close its curtain.” Kind of a shame that we couldn’t get more Shilla in the story because that was a remarkable moment and it didn’t have the punch that it probably should have.
What was that with the glitch in the videotape? This wasn’t just a problem with what was posted on DailyMotion; I checked the episode on DramaCool and it had the same glitch. It appeared that when Wang Guhn and KH were sitting together and talking about attacking Bekjae, the Shilla king was also in the room with them. But they cut him out of that scene entirely except for that one fast-forwarded second that somehow ended up in the episode. I wonder why? It would have been an extraordinary sight, the three of them sitting at a table together. Did someone axe it because it wasn’t historically justifiable? There must be an interesting story in there somewhere.
Someone hasn’t been paying attention!
KH, wanting in on the battle: “I founded Bekjae, and I wish to dissolve it myself.” How could WG turn him down after that? He did just make a long journey to Song-ak so he can handle a trip, and look at the PR value of having him staring at his own troops. I’m surprised WG even hesitated. (But they really should have brought a carriage for him to ride in.) And his carbuncle is better, there’s some good news.
What the heck is that garish uniform WG is wearing? Is that historically accurate? Good heavens!
And of course an awesome montage to go with this. Those beautiful visuals of the two armies moving through the countryside, that couldn’t have been cheap to produce.
Why were any of the Koryo guys surprised that KH would say he wanted to lead the vanguard? I didn’t like the way this whole thing was written. They literally made a huge change to their battle plan at the last second because of what KH said right there and then. No way. This would all have been thoroughly discussed before any of them left the capital. And I really doubt that they have custom seamstresses traveling with the army who can make special-order banners on the spot. This was the weak spot of the episode.
On the other hand, right after that we got the best moment of this episode: when the Bekjae troops got a look at Kyun-hwon and you saw the reaction ripple through the formation so quickly. That was terrific. And then Yaesul rolling his eyes, while KH was trash-talking him, that was hilarious. Whoever directed that sequence did an excellent job.
As with the navy sequence in the previous episode, it did seem hard to accept that there would be an instant paralysis like this among every single soldier…but this was probably another one of those Hey-it-looks-good-on-TV moments that the writers couldn’t resist. Oh well….
It sure feels like next week will be an awfully abrupt ending, considering where we are in the story. But we’ll deal with that in the series wrap-up thread.

■ Kyun-hwon’s surrender: Wang Guhn tended to Kyun-hwon with extraordinary attention when he came to Koryo. He continued to refer to him as Foster Father and gave him the South Palace to reside (in). He placed him above the ranks of all government officials and gave him the city of Yangju along with gifts of gold, silk, 40 servants and 10 horses. Yangju is the northern district of modern-day Seoul, and it was the first settlement of Old Bekjae. By giving Yangju to Kyun-hwon, perhaps Wang Guhn was trying to convey to him that he was still the symbol of Bekjae.
Gotta say it again--Shin-guhm is looking and acting nothing like the boob he used to be.
■ On October 17h, 935 AD, Prince Shin-guhm is at last installed as the 2nd king of Later Bekjae. Over seven months had passed since his rebellion against his father, showing us that the process was not swift or easy. Following his enthronement, Shin-guhm begins to prepare for the final battle with Koryo. Meanwhile in Shilla, the officials were in final talks regarding their surrender.

■ In September of 936, Wang Guhn finally embarked on the conquest of Bekjae, and Shin-guhm led his great army to Il-li to meet the challenge. Wang Guhn first deployed a large army led by his son and Park Sulhee, and he followed behind with another division of troops to Il-sun, modern-day Goomi and Sun-san. This was to be the final battle that would bring the era of the Later Three Kingdoms to an end, and befittingly it was the biggest battle of all time. Military distribution of Koryo forces was as follows: 1st army of 10,000 cavalrymen led by Kyun-hwon and Park Sulhee; 2md army of 10,000 infantrymen; 3rd army of 10,000 cavalrymen led by Hong Yu and Park Su-moon; another 20,000 cavalry led by Wang Soon-shik of Myungju; 9,500 tribal warriors of the north mobilized by Yu Geumpil; and Wang Guhn’s main army. In all, Koryo forces totaled 86,800 including 49,800 infantrymen and 37,000 cavalrymen. It was a battle of unprecedented scale. While there are no records about Bekjae’s army, we know that it was no less large by Kyun-hwon’s quote to his son recorded in the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms. He writes, “…While your army is twice the size of the Koryo army, you are in disadvantage still….” This was entirely possible since Bekjae included Cholla, Choongchung and South Kyungsang provinces, which were fertile territory rich in resources.
And of course an awesome montage to go with this. Those beautiful visuals of the two armies moving through the countryside, that couldn’t have been cheap to produce.
