Shin-guhm: “It is unfair and it infuriates me, but yes.” WOW. Coming right out and admitting that he feels unqualified for the throne, that was one of the most stunning moments of the whole series. Could not believe it. He’s continually coveted it, worked for it, talked about getting it, but now this? This is a fascinating side of Shin-guhm and I wish we’d seen it a lot sooner. Criticizing a “self-serving rationalization to capture the throne” shows he’s a more sophisticated thinker about this stuff than we knew. “I cannot overthrow my father and rule this kingdom without justifiable cause and acceptance of the people.” He’s right, of course…but it feels like the writers missed a great opportunity here to show this side of him a long time ago. It would have made him more interesting and invested us more in his story earlier on.
The silent sideways glances during the Bekjae military meeting were terrific. You could tell that not everybody was buying into the changes, even though they said they were. Whoever is in charge of filming the Bekjae meetings continues to do excellent work.
Eleven episodes ago Sangui was put in charge of the navy. Now he’s in charge of palace security? No, something is wrong there. If there really was such a radical reassignment, it should have been explained. I think one of the subtitle names may have been wrong as well so there may have been a problem with that scene.
Choi traveling through the local streets, that was nicely filmed, capturing his conversation on horseback. Good work by the crew.
Hey Shin-guhm just smashed his cup on the table and broke it! Dude, be more careful…although, it’s not like you ever put any liquid in there, is it.
Another huge surprise was Choi Seung Woo telling Geum-kang to back down. So after advising Kyun-hwon to literally kill KH’s three other sons, now he’s on their side? What’s going on here? Or is Choi just getting old and losing his edge. Hmmm…but the most interesting part of that scene was how clueless Geum-kang was about how ugly things could get. He came off as way too naïve. Maybe he’s not as cut out for the throne as his father thinks he is.
Yang-guhm: “We will not let that one-eyed child steal this kingdom.” Not sure why but that was very funny. Maybe the delivery.
“Exile? Send men without crime away on exile, Your Majesty?” ExACTly. Like doing that will help people be friendlier to Geum-kang on the throne? Seriously?
“Order your subjects to take their own lives instead!” Anybody else getting tired of that Shilla prince? Dude, you made your point, stop being so dramatic over and over again. Ugh.
Usually I complain when a series gets too fixated on power struggles within a small gorup of people within a palace and that’s all we see. This one is actually fine, partly because it’s being done well and partly because it’s been building for a long time and we’re finally getting to what will be a big climactic resolution of it either way. But it’s gone on for long enough now. Let’s pleae have it out in the next episoe and move forward.
