Shin-guhm complaining about Choi Seung Woo not being on his side, that is just awful. Choi handed him the clear path to the throne! All he had to do was execute the naval raid just like Choi laid it out. But nooooo, he had to go chasing after Yu Geumpil. Hey Einstein, whose fault was that?
It’s a shame that Kyun-hwon is only doing some of the things now that he’d have been better off doing twenty years ago. As in, giving his sons assignments to make them better leaders. By now it’s hard to know how much of Shin-guhm’s deficiency is innate and unfixable vs. how much is his getting so little positive guidance from his father.
Speaking of Shin-guhm needing guidance…he drank from an empty cup in this one. Twice! Ugh.
KH: “Vice Prime Minister, how cruel you are. They are my sons, and they have not committed any crime deserving of death.” Yeah and not just cruel, this is surprisingly unenlightened on Choi’s part. Does he really think that the merit subjects and the rest of the country will be more accepting of Geum-kang on the throne because his dad murdered his brothers? Good heavens no. Choi seems to be slipping some in his old age. He really blew it assuming that Wang Guhn would be in the capital when the raid was launched. And now this. He’s still the smartest guy in the room but apparently not by as much these days.
Mrs. Kyun-hwon: “He is just like your grandfather. He abandoned his children for his second wife and went to Koryo. The same thing is happening to us.” She’s right and isn’t it fascinating? Absolutely textbook case of a parent repeating the same harmful behavior he saw from his own parent.
So we finally get to Koryo…Didn’t it seem sort of disrespectful how the Koryo guys were talking to the Shilla envoys? Laughing about how weak Shilla has become and almost rubbing their noses in it. I didn’t understand why the envoys didn’t react badly to that. Probably they had to grin and bear it because what choice did they have, but they were there as an independent state and they were being told Why don’t you just give up your state. WG certainly wouldn’t have been happy to hear his subordinates behaving like that.
“Her majesty has been touring the countryside and leading the campaign for hunger and poverty relief.” Wow this is a surprise. So Doyoung has gotten off her high horse and is doing something good for others? She’s come a long way from the unlikeable person she was for quite a while. Good for her. But I still am very sad that we’ve never heard from Buyong since she went away for a rest. Because she was the real deal, in every way. I wish we at least could have seen her once more and learn how she was doing.
