Pretty straightforward: first Shin-guhm screws up again, then we’re with Choi Ung on what apparently is his last day. The first part was better than the second.
The buildup to the fleet ambush was excellent. Especially liked the concern that Choi was showing while everybody around him was taking the bait. The only iffy part was Yu Geumpil’s boat getting close enough to the enemy fleet to have a conversation, but apparently Bekjae didn’t have a single bow and arrow on board to take a shot at Yu. But it made for entertaining TV, and by now we’ve learned we just have to roll our eyes and get a good laugh out of this kind of thing.
The ambush itself, we could have done with a little less of the guys running around with their entire uniforms on fire. Yeah there would have been some of that, but they’d have put each other out quickly or else just jumped in the water and climbed back in. The shot of the flagship’s sail and mast burning and crumbling, THAT is what worked well. But of course that’s expensive stuff so you can’t fault them for not doing more...just didn’t need so many guys on fire, that’s all. Otherwise the whole thing was well done, nice piece of storytelling the way they built it up so patiently.
And then at the end of it all, the nomads wouldn’t stop saluting Yu even after all the trouble it’s caused him, and he just groans and shakes his head, that was darned funny!
“Shin-guhm doesn’t know when to leave well enough alone...
Yessir! Once again the guy playing KH does a great job. Have to say he’s reached the level of the guy who played Goongyae. Very different characters but KH has become equally fascinating.
Wang Guhn, reading the report on Yu’s ambush: “He managed to eliminate more than a thousand enemy troops.” Gotta call a rare foul here. There’s no way the Koryo side could come up with an accurate number on that so soon, especially if soldiers from the damaged ships were being transferred onto the remaining ships. Eventually the total would probably become known to them through spies or gossip or whatever, but not this soon. I wish they had put a narrated text in right at this point, and give us some views of the actual location so we could get a better idea of how the ambush worked. That would have been a much better way to present the casualty number.
The whole Choi Ung storyline...like I said last week, is he really worthy of this much attention? Taepyoung dying didn’t get anywhere hear this kind of treatment, and Taepyoung was a much more likeable character, with a more relatable backstory. Certainly don’t want to seem disrespectful--he was a real person who accomplished impressive things and absolutely it’s sad that anyone should die so young--but it just feels like it’s being overdone.
But I did like the narration of the letter. Certainly sounded like an actual letter that’s survived to the present.
Wah wah wah...but now here we go, because he’ll go home and you know daddy will make Geum-kang the crown prince. So finally it’s all gonna start hitting the fan.
