Park Sulhee: “So what brings the ugly beast of Bekjae all the way here?” Bra-vo...if he keeps up the primo trash-talking we may have to forgive him for that awful pining-for-lady-Daeju storyline.
Nicely filmed scene with the battering ram. Maybe a little heavy on the roof guys falling off the roof—looked like it was raining bodies there for a bit—but overall we’ll take it. The horror on the Koryo officers’ faces at realizing they’d have to abandon the palace, that was good.
The Bekjae army is back to its policy of killing the innocent civilians in the palace who are fleeing for their lives. You’d think they ought to know better after the backlash they got when they did the same thing in Surabul.
But at least the eunuch who told them WG wasn’t here didn’t get slaughtered. That’s a typical move we see from “bad guys” in historicals, kill him anyway. The guy told them what they needed to know so they let him go. Maybe he got killed later anyway, who knows....
It would have been hilarious if Shin-guhm had picked up WG’s throne and taken it home with him. Wish he’d done it.
Next morning: Why wasn’t the palace burned to the ground? Wasn’t that a surprise? It seems like the obvious thing to do, especially since WG wasn’t home and the attackers were ticked off about that. In fact they had enough fire arrows to torch the whole city if they wanted to. Maybe not the residential areas because they didn’t have a large force and the residents would have put the fires out, but certainly the entire palace/government complex.
General Hong: “This is a disgrace! We’ve been completely had!” Yeah it really is a disgrace…especially when Bok Jikyum was saying how far away most of the troops are from the capital. It’s almost inconceivable to leave your capital so exposed—and that’s on Choi Ung, I’d expect, since he’s the military minister. Wonder if he’ll be held accountable….
WG: “This explains my disturbing dreams last night.” Like I said last time, this was totally unnecessary. These writers seem to have a thing for omens and premonitions. Blecch.
Oh and speaking of which, where was that Jihong guy the astrologer? How come he couldn’t see this coming? Poser.
There’s a wad of cash right there, spent just to have a triumphant meeting image. It wasn’t the least bit necessary but it sure spiced up the scene visually. Continues to be way, way impressive how this series got such a big budget (and spent it wisely).
“We’ve destroyed Koryo’s mighty naval force and set their palace ablaze. We’ve won!” Yeah they sure did win...This is an amazing thing, how they pulled it off and went right into the enemy capital like they did. Of all of the significant military victories in the story, this has to be on top just for how impressive the achievement is. And let’s give credit here—Shin-guhm handled it beautifully. He kept his calm; even when he found out that WG wasn’t there, he settled down pretty quickly and refocused. He looked and acted like a leader should. Stayed sober, can’t overlook that. And he didn’t do anything impulsive or call any stupid audibles like he inevitably does to always get himself in trouble. It sure will be interesting to see how his father reacts to this, because it wasn’t SG’s fault that he couldn’t bring WG’s head home with them, and every other aspect of the invasion was a complete success. He can't just turn his back and give the throne to Geum-kang after this.
SG: “We will rest for a few days, then seek out and destroy the rest of Koryo’s naval force.” Seriously? I literally had just typed the previous paragraph and here we go. There’s almost nothing left of the naval force, and yet here we go with an audible. This wasn’t in the plan and you just know it won’t turn out well if Choi can’t talk him out of it. Wow.
“He is learned in astrology and divination. He knows of my approaching death. That is why he calls.” UGH. Worst ending of the series. BOOOOOOOO.
