WG: “It would be an embarrassment if a warrior was scared away from the battlefield because of unlucky feelings.” …As opposed to blundering your way into unfamiliar territory and getting 10,000 of your men killed, yeah THIS is embarrassing, mm-hmm okay there. Lead on, Einstein.
Yaesul is a real SOB but if you’re trying to win a battle you sure do need somebody like him. He’s a heck of an asset to Kyun-hwon.
Park Yongkyu: “The power of rumor is great indeed. News of our consecutive victories against Koryo has spread far and wide.” I think maybe “rumor” was a mistranslation because it’s news of the battle outcomes that’s spread, not any sort of rumor...but it sure is interesting to see how so many of the local lords have suddenly lost faith in WG and are bailing on him.
Park Sulhee: “How could we have been so blind to this?” Seems to be contagious!
WG: “The road is rough and the ravine is deep. It was in such a place that we were ambushed in Mt. Gong.” And you can read Jimong’s face perfectly, How can this guy possibly be so stupid.
OK I wouldn’t complain about the lighting in this one—it was within what you could allow for a brightly moonlit night—except we were just specifically told by the Bekjae command that this was a perfect night for an ambush because there was no moon. I do understand, the producers want us to see who’s who and what's happening...but I’d rather go for more authenticity here even if it means not always seeing clearly.
But that being said, that momentary glimpse from the high ground was very effective. It doesn’t carry the raw drama of being right there in the middle of it all, but it shows very clearly just how bad the situation is for anybody trapped down there.
And the editing in that sequence was excellent. All kinds of chaos going on and it was perfectly coherent from one camera shot to the next. Very nice.
So what is Jimong doing right up there at the front? He has no sword and no idea what to do. While they’re heading to the battle scene, okay he should be next to WG, but once they get there he’s a liability.
Kim Chong: “Indeed the rumor is true! King Wang Guhn is a tremendous swordsman!” Oh good grief this again. Show us him in training to learn swordsmanship. Just once, show us, so we can buy this. Please.
Seriously?
Everybody stands there and watches Yu Geumpil and Yaesul fight. This again. Was this really done back then? We’ve seen so much of it.
Yaesul: “That man is not human! He is a beast! Seal the gate!” OK that was darned funny. The way Yu was mowing guys down, maybe a little over the top, but at least you can totally accept Yu having strong sword skills. WG, no.
For all of the heroism and all of the remarkable individuals we've seen in this story, the whole thing is coming down to who can avoid hitting the bottom first. The foolishness on both sides is absolutely stunning.
So Shin-geum is frustrated once again...but to be fair this wasn’t his doing at all. He did call an audible but it was a perfectly reasonable audible, and Koryo sacrificed a huge number of soldiers to get WG to safety. They did lose the fort, but they had no idea about Yu Geumpil so it was a justifiable risk to take there too. So I wouldn’t fault him. Probably won’t stop his daddy though, will it.
