Terrific episode. Loved it. Not perfect but really good. The storyline right now is fascinating, and watching somebody try to solve a mystery when you know the answer, when it’s done well like it was here with the Where’s-Kyun-hwon, it’s great fun.
Shin-geum: “Aaaiiguuu! I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t! The world is against me!” Yep. You’re the victim. Yessir.
So it took us 155 episodes but we have our first meme:
The guy playing Kyun-hwon was terrific in this one. He’s keeping the character fresh and interesting even after our seeing him so regularly throughout the series and now having to react to one after the other of his bumbling son’s screw-ups.
“The fish is in the net! Fire the arrows!” Well Geum-kang walked right into that one…totally pulled a Shin-geum. Now what.
Again with the flaming arrows? Was disappointing to see that gimmick yet again. But after that, wow the battle scene was amazing, some of the best work of the whole series. Those flaming logs, incredible work pulling off those sequences. Bravo.
Although…we saw several horses falling down during the action, and the way they fell down, with what we know now you can’t help but wonder how they did it.
That aside, the nighttime pursuit of Geum-kang was terrific, right up until all of a sudden they stuck in a camera shot of one of the Koryo generals, and it’s almost sunrise—the sky is medium blue. Just for the one shot. Anybody else get totally thrown by that? It was just there for a few seconds, certainly not necessary to include it. That was very odd. Somebody should have caught that in post-production and removed it. Uncharacteristically sloppy for this series…or for any series, it was VERY sloppy.
Okay yes KH is approaching Surabul now…but why have him change out of the soldier gear and into something so target-able now that you’re approaching a combat zone? Wouldn’t you want to keep him as blended-in as possible?
Oh. Okay maybe Choi was on to something after all.
KH to Choi Seung Woo: “You risked high stakes to gain Surabul: Daeya, Yongju, my soldiers and my sons as well.” Yeah that’s totally true, he really did. “You are truly bold to call an army of ten thousand and lives of the princes a small sacrifice. Only you would have the guts for this.” I was thinking that very thing as the princes were fumbling the two forts away—what if one or more of the princes had died? Would Choi have been able to keep his boss focused on taking the capital, or would his focus have collapsed? And to lose most of the 10,000 troops that Bekjae committed to the two forts, won’t that make them vulnerable now? The resolution of this is going to be very interesting.
