Gee that was an awfully small contingent of soldiers that WG sent off to battle at the beginning. Budget getting a little tight? (Well it was only for a narrated text so I guess we cut them some slack…we’ve gotten a little spoiled.)
Dammit, spoiler! Stop doing that! But bravo for the map.
So half of Bekjae’s forces won’t be in the battle…the elite troops at that…instead they’re going to try to advance to the capital and do it covertly? 10,000 soldiers? Really? Wow I gotta see this….
“Gong-jik will protect the imperial city.” He took that well…the guy they leave behind never takes it well. Good for him.
Kyun-hwon, wearing a soldier uniform to go incognito: ‘I was once a common footsoldier in Shilla, born of a provincial lord. I will go to any length to fulfill my goal.” And you know what, he looks totally natural in the soldier uniform. WG wouldn’t. But then when he was standing with his men, I did notice he was shorter than the rest of them. So maybe that scene with WG a couple of episodes wasn’t so strange after all.
Choi Seung Woo: “As a scholar of Shilla, I studied the topography of mountains surrounding Surabul. Mt. Gong is an extraordinary mountain where 10,000 troops can easily be waylaid…we could lose Daeya and Yongju Fort if the enemy comes at us with a force greater than ours. But regardless King Wang Guhn will take his remaining troops and come after us once he learns that you are in Surabul. His troops will be exhausted from travel by the time they arrive, and we can kill or capture Wang Guhn if we ambush them at Mt. Gong….If all goes according to plan, the grand enterprise of unification will be complete.” This guy never ceases to amaze. WG has a lot of smart people around him but this guy is more valuable than all of them put together.
So Shin-geum sends wine to the soldiers, against the advice of the prime minister. Gee what could possibly go wrong? He never learns. Never! But did this really happen? Look at all those drunken Bekjae soldiers. If it didn’t happen this way then it kind of minimizes the Koryo/Shilla achievement. You do have to give the series the benefit of the doubt; it’s been remarkably faithful to real history, but I’ve lost count of how many times the prince has done something stupid and gotten soldiers killed because of it. You have to put a narrated text here because it’s getting almost too nutty to believe, what a boob the guy is.
Neunghwan responds to that observation about Shin-geum having “repressed resentment”: “Can you blame him? I know how he feels.” Well that was VERY interesting. I never saw the parallel there but yeah it sure does make sense.
Wow full credit to those Shilla infiltrators, they kicked butt.
Shin-geum: “What were our scouts doing outside the fort? How could thousands of soldiers descend on us undetected?” Been there, done that.
“This is all because of that godforsaken wine!” You don’t end an episode with a line like that very often, do you. Yeah…princes don’t kill people, wine kills people. Unreal.
But this was a really good episode. Another good example of the story being ineteresting enough to hold your interest even after losing the most compelling character.
■ In 927 AD, the tenth year of Wang Guhn’s reign, he finally broke out of the stagnation that followed the defeat in Jomul Fort battle and re-embarked on his crusade. Koryo’s main target was Yongju (now Yaechun) and Daeya Fort (now Hapchun). Yongju was particularly important, as it represented a base for future southward expansion. But the most remarkable detail in this battle is the fact that Koryo and Shilla had formed a coalition and fought Bekjae together. Bekjae now stood alone in the Three Kingdoms and this bolstered Wang Guhn’s confidence. But Wang Guhn’s era was yet to come. Another crushing defeat would be waiting for him in this battle. Nevertheless, Wang Guhn and his army sets out for the battleground like this. Meanwhile, Bekjae was preparing for their aggression as well.
