So they started this one by rerunning the archer shot. They did milk that shot little too a long—in the amount of time Geum-kang was watching the arrow coming at him, he could easily have flinched and dodged it. But it’s TV so okay, whatever....
...and so he gets shot in the eye. Sure was ugly, especially him yanking out the arrow himself, ewwww ...but this is what happens on a battlefield and the battle scenes have been very realistic, so fair enough. And at least you had to figure this was the grossest thing you’ll see for a long time, right? ....Right? ...nooooooo.....
You really want to put that at the beginning of an episode? Because it’s all anybody will think about for the rest of the hour. I mean, now that we’re streaming it you can stop the stream and walk away for a while. But when it aired on TV? You could put the plate-spinning guy from The Ed Sullivan Show out there on the battlefield and nobody would even process it because everyone is just too stunned by what happened right there in front of them. Which sort of was the point, yes, but it felt disruptive as an opening scene.
Shin Guhm criticizing his brother: “We lost a battle that was close to being won because of his negligence.” Well at least he didn’t say it was “because he lacked vision.”
Thank goodness!
So what exactly did the actor put in his mouth? Or maybe we’re better off not knowing....
Give Yaesul a ton of credit for being the one guy to hang around and compliment Geum-kang after his brother trashed him. He deserved so much better than they got. To be fair about it, he does deserve a lot of the blame. If he had just pulled the arrow out and withdrawn himself for treatment, especially with the way he continued to exhort this troops forward, they probably would have pulled themselves together and finished the job. But instead he...you know...and everybody stood there so stunned their minds went blank. On the other hand, though, they were getting nowhere until Geum-kang took the lead. So he should get credit for that, certainly. (I guess he should have stuck the thing in his pocket and swallowed it on his own time.)
Does anybody know how much of it all is actually true? The prince being in battle and losing an eye, I don't think the series would make that up. But when he said he’s doing the other thing because Cao Cao did it, I got very suspicious because when we started watching the series truth cautioned us that there are things in it that are based on things in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. So at least the swallowing part of it seemed doubtful. But it didn’t go away. It became a big deal in the storyline, to the point where it felt like Why would they make up something so bizarre that became to meaningful to the story.
Oh and he says he did it because it was a gift from his parents. Huh. Wow that kid must be really tough to shop for.
Not very classy, Mrs. Kyun-hwon...give poor Kobe a break for once.
Good for WG for holding his kid responsible for the whole thing and not just that his side won.
Kyun-hwon: “I’m not trying to blame anyone. But at least be a man! Admit your mistakes instead of turning the blame elsewhere!” This was a wonderful scene, and so much silence during it...Somebody should have played this scene to the LBKT producers to show how you can make a great scene without drowning it in music.
But geez, the prince is all the way back home and they still haven’t changed his bloody dressing? Shame on them. Yecch.
Look who showed up! I guess he hasn't been able to retire on his EWG residuals.
So they give Doyoung the empress title...and in that whole sequence there’s not even a mention of Buyong. Shouldn’t there have been at least an explanation of what the deal is with her and how Doyoung fits into all of this now? I don't get why such a good character is getting buried.
They tell the royal consorts to pay their respects to the new empress...and we only see two of them? Where’s the rest of the harem? Weren’t you expecting rows and rows of immaculately dressed women to step forward? That didn't look right at all. But Suin sure was classy about it all. She sure has matured.
General Bae: “Wine tastes especially sweet today!” Not if the cups are empty it doesn’t. I’m on to you fakers!
“Sound the music, let us dance!” Obviously the cups were full after all, my bad.
Doyoung is saying how much joy she has over he promotion...but wow that vein in her head looks like it’s about to bust open, it’s throbbing so hard. How soon before she becomes a major pain in the butt? Anybody want to start a pool?
But let’s be honest, all the rest of this, how could you even concentrate on it. By miles and miles the grossest thing I’ve ever seen in a historical. And once you’ve seen it you can’t unsee it.

■ Records are unclear about the time of Madam Doyoung’s installation as the empress, but historians believe it was about the time Prince Mu became the Heir Apparent. While Doyoung becomes the empress, Suin would remain among the royal consorts. Thus the hierarchy among the royal consorts becomes clear. Perhaps Wang Guhn was concerned about the rivalry that may exist between his 29 consorts and many children, and wanted to put them in their place early on. So Doyoung becomes the elder of the palace recognized by all. And she would be called Empress Janghwa by the later generations.
