Half of the plot, from here:
Another of KBS' 80s historical dailies, this one's about a Royal Cook from Hamgyeong during the Reform Era (1876~1897) of Gojong's reign named Cheon Young Taek (Episode 1 says the drama actually starts in 1893). As a child, his sister was sold to Qing over his parents' gambling debts. The female lead, Yun Yeonshil's grandfather was exiled to Hamgyeong, and so Young Taek learned how to read from him. When the grandfather dies, Young Taek meets Yeonshil during the funeral. Young Taek moves to Hanyang and learns to cook from a Japanese hotel owner named Yuki Masao. He also meets a girl named Wol Yi, who wears Western clothes and recently lost her father.
When they grow up, Masao moves Young Taek to cook at another hotel, and eventually makes him hotel manager. On the other hand, the Yun family loses all their fortune to the ongoing land surveys, and resorts to begging from neighbors for food and selling their slaves. Yeonshil eventually gets married, but her husband dies suddenly and so Yeonshil is now a widow. Young Taek, who was in love with her, is disappointed, but moves on and gets engaged with Wol Yi. Meanwhile, the Yun family adopts a son, who is rumored to be Young Taek's half brother... I think. Young Taek eventually becomes a Royal Cook, and impresses Gojong with his Western cooking (although this part happens in Episode 1??).
Final episode reveals the whole show is a flashback, and that Young Taek gets to meet the King, which has never happened before as a Royal Cook. Gojong grants him one wish, and Young Taek chooses to ask to leave the Capital with Yeonshil, which he grants. And they live happily ever after, under the circumstances...
Apparently, due to "unethical content," the show got shortened and was supposed to end in December 1985, but the show was given an extra month because of high ratings and because the love triangle between Young Taek, Wol Yi and Yeonshil was so popular.
