Story (translated from this link: blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?isHttpsRedirect=true&blogId=ilsunjo&logNo=70001571541):
Once upon a time, a nobleman got his slave pregnant. When the madam of the house found out, she accuses the slave of seducing the nobleman and harshly tortured her. After escaping (probably to the forest, if it's anything like other KBS2 dramas with this kind of birth story), she gives birth to a boy and dies. Before dying, the slave curses the family that put her in this situation. Coincidentally, the Madam is also pregnant, and when she gives birth, the babies are switched at her other servant's request (because the Madam really respects that servant and her husband or something?). And so, the slave's boy, named Dal Seo is raised in the noble family, while the Madam's son, named Lee Mankang is raised as a slave's son. When they both grow up, their parents tell them the truth and ask them not to do anything about it, just live their lives as they are. But Mankang, unsatisfied with his fate, decides to take back his place.
Somewhere along the line, Dal Seo gets married to a girl named Soongeum, and rapes and beats her until she kills herself, while Mankang falls in love with a noblewoman named Bo Ok and approaches her under the name Eom Taekju. When Dal Seo eventually reassumes his place as the illegitimate son, he finds out from his father that his mother's family were also noblemen, but fell after being accused of treason.
This drama actually got cut short by a month for various reasons. Firstly, because writer Im Chung got in trouble with KBS over a line in his drama. The line in question being: "Once a monk gets the taste of meat, not even a bedbug will be left in the temple." This line was condemned by Lee Hyang Bong, then leader of the Buddhist Jogye Sect. After that, Hwang Jeong Ah, who played Lady Hong in the drama, was dissatisfied with ratings and pulled out from the drama. This resulted in a rewrite as she was fairly significant to the plot. Finally, Im Chung developed a cataract, and could not write any further.
Nine years later, after remaking Im Chung's drama "Jang Hee Bin," SBS remade Song of Yearning into a 63-episode drama named "Mankang," or Full Heart as it's known on MDL. Featuring the writer's son Im Ho as Mankang and Jung Bo Seok reprising his role as Dal Seo (in the 2nd half, An Tae Seo played in the first half), Oh Yeon Soo took the role of Bo Ok. A trailer here:
Interestingly enough, SBS hasn't restored this for its website, which is curious considering Jang Hee Bin is there.

Broadcast date: April 1st, 1996~November 5th, 1996.
Broadcast time: Mon~Tues at 9:40 PM.

SBS used to have a page with HD pictures from the remake, alongside other dramas like Jang Hee Bin and Im Kkeok Jeong [now only preserved by a rerun from CNTV]. I'll link it if I find it, but it's a good thing I downloaded those pictures (11 in all). For now, have this one:
