“His execution would be an admission of his majesty’s own failure.” This is a tough call. Yes the northern conquest was huge, the dominant issue in the kingdom...but we’ve seen royal retainers get executed for treason plenty of times and the king has never been reluctant to execute them because of fear it will make him look bad. I think Goongyae has to take his medicine on this one, or at least someone else will have to convince him to take it.
■ Wang Guhn’s second wife Madam Oh of Naju gave birth to his first son at last. This was in the year 912, shortly before Wang Guhn was appointed Imperial Guardian. Wang Guhn’s first son would later become King Haejong, the second king of Koryo. Titled Crown Prince in 921, Haejong would succeed his father’s throne in 934 against many contending princes. Behind his enthronement was the tireless effort of his mother Madam Oh who would later be known as Queen Janghwa.
Some spoilers in there that could be very ugly, but we’ll wait and see.
WG: “I thank God for letting us carry on our family line.” Geez, a little insensitive to say that in front of the other wives. But the two of them sure took the high road on it.
All this stuff we’re hearing about people dancing in the streets and rejoicing over the pause of the northward conquest and the rest of it...how about letting us see that? Especially if they’re praising WG and not Goongyae—that’s a very important thing and it should be emphasized. Not enough commoner scenes in this series.
I was a little surprised that Park Jil, the guy who Ahjitae picked to be the imperial guardian, was sitting there talking to the other lords and hadn’t been implicated in the conspiracy. Usually a guy in his position is presumed guilty and hauled away with everybody else.
Ahjitae: “So I am to take the fall for all of the problems in the state and let the emperor off the hook?” Rookie mistake, WG—there was no way he’d agree to that! Come on dude wise up.
Buyong: “Doyoung’s child is our child.” She is one in a million.
Mrs. Kyun-hwon seems to have reached some sort of acceptance of Madame Kobe. She can sit with her nowdays without ripping into her.
KH: “There is no need to rush. A war cannot be won in haste.” Where was that when he needed it? Better late than never, but ouch.
Letting Ahjitae speak freely at the sentencing was an even bigger rookie mistake by WG. Massive rookie mistake! And didn’t you just think for a minute that Ahjitae might just save his neck? Especially when he dropped the empress bomb—that was the biggest shocker in a long time, a real blast from the past. If he hadn’t overplayed it with that nonsense about “WG sold his woman for power” or whatever the exact words were...you never know. Of course he dragged Jongkahn into it too, and claimed it was WG’s fault that Goongyae drinks too much. And maybe he never had a chance anyway...but for a moment you had to wonder.
