So we took a big fictional detour in this one, with Buyong running away and nearly drowning herself, and now ending up at a monastery. Going way off track here...and everybody can throw sticks and stones at me...but I loved it. Totally bought into it, thought it was really well done. Buyong is such a good person, you can absolutely buy her being so devastated and doing what she did. How can you not feel for her. This new monk is an interesting character, and the scenes between them were very touching. Obviously we don’t want it going on too long and taking over the series, but if they’re going to stick relationship-y stuff into a drama like this, then at least do it right.
“It is inconceivable...Academic training for infants. What could they possibly learn?” Yeah...frankly this is getting a bit hard to accept. Did the real Goongyae really order this? Maybe he did—and this series does tend to be very diligent about accurate details--but Goongyae isn’t a complete idiot and you wonder how he couldn’t see how silly it is. Anybody know for certain?
Didn’t register right away but the guy playing Park Yu is the guy who played Yeon Gaesomun in DJY. He was also in IYSS and Jeong Dojeon (and Gwanggaeto which I didn’t see) but his face is hard to forget from DJY.
“The marriage was his majesty’s decision.” Um, not really...Wasn’t it pretty much a foregone conclusion by the time he got word of it? Hate to keep harping on it but this whole thing was set up very poorly.
Oh and now there’s Doyoung back on the bow of the flagship. Yes I understand why they staged it like that, it’s for TV, but she has absolutely no business there. None!
Okay wait just a minute...If Buyong were actually there in the crowd when WG returned, didn’t she hear Goongyae talk about the two wives? Maybe not, but you had to wonder. Putting her in that scene was unnecessary and confusing.
Goongyae: “Trust and abide my command.” The squirming all up and down the table was very well done. And then the murmuring too. Tip of the cap to the director.
WG: “I am to blame for everything...” No argument there! You dumbbell.
We at least got a glimpse of the conscripted citizens doing the palace-building. We need a lot more of that sort of thing.
“...Nothing but perfection will be tolerated in this house as long as I am here. Is that clear?” Wow! All of a sudden Doyoung is the wicked stepmother. So she’s a bitch to the hired help, I suppose we shouldn’t be entirely surprised by it...but now is she going to be a villain for the rest of the series? Maybe this starts to explain why she’s been portrayed so oddly the entire time so far. Whatever, this character continues to confuse and distract from the story. Ugh.
Aw gee, now Mrs. Kyun-hwon is trying to stir up trouble. Never expected she’d turn troublemaker. Certainly can understand her frustration but it’s a shame.
Choi Seung Woo: “It is baffling that Goongyae would make this mistake, with his uncanny ability to read the hearts of his people.” So many intelligent characters and so many good observations, it makes the series stand out. Never a dull moment.
“Love and yearning dissolve like bubbles with time. But what can you do? Mortals are foolish beings incapable of controlling their own emotions.” Can’t wait for the next episode to see more of these two. Poor Buyong--the latest in the string of women getting a lousy deal.

■Sukchong...A disciple of high monk Jinpyo, he was the dominant figure in [the] Bupsang school of Buddhism that worshipped Maitreya and Ksitigarbha. Sukchong would later give Wang Guhn Maitreya Commandments that were bequeathed to him by Jinpyo.
Goongyae: “Trust and abide my command.” The squirming all up and down the table was very well done. And then the murmuring too. Tip of the cap to the director.
■Goongyae’s reform...Goongyae tightened up his government organizations and set about creating an infallible administration. But this resulted in strengthening Goongyae’s dictatorship and weakening the power of his subjects.
