The buildup to the invasion has been presented beautifully and this episode was the culmination of it, and they spared no expense. Right from the beginning, the royal traveling entourage approaching Jungju, it was gorgeous. And the ending, they gave a full five minutes to the departure and put serious time and effort and money into staging it, and it sure showed. Outstanding work, totally sold the gravity and significance of the event.
“I served you, general. At my father’s command, I served shi-chim.” Well it did all start on a sour note. So WG wasn’t too drunk to boink her after all. Really? Did anybody else have a hard time believing that? He was so drunk and so messed-up that I don’t believe he could have possibly followed through. And she seems so sad, and her sprit so broken down by how this has all played out. Especially his calling out someone else's name! She’s a very smart person and is someone of such good character...even if this all works out in the end, she deserves better. How could you not feel sorry for her.
And frankly I don’t agree with Lord Yu’s timing on this at all. It's the night before the invasion-—should this be weighing on the commanding general’s mind? Of course not.
But the scene with the two of them sitting at the table talking, it was very nicely done by both of the actors. CSJ handled it well, certainly much better than those painfully awkward scenes in the first half of EOS with Lady Junghwa. Of course the writing is about a hundred times better here, but still, credit where credit is due.
The same “Choong! Choong!” chant that we got in God of War.
When the three operatives showed up, I was disappointed in WG for not asking Goongyae to receive them and acknowledge what they accomplished. They did great work! Same with Yu Geumpil. Those guys deserved recognition.
Sudal: “I can’t belive they are fearful of that child. I am appalled!” It’s become very entertaining to see how much of this is turning out to hinge on messing with Sudal’s head. And the guy playing Sudal, yet another good piece of casting. You can believe that he has a mess-able head.
Wait a minute-—WG told Geumsung they wouldn’t have to pay any taxes? Did he clear that with Goongyae first? I don’t like the sound of this one bit. How much you want to bet this is going to cause trouble. I mean, everybody in the kingdom should pay at least some taxes so eventually Geumsung should too. Otherwise it will cause resentment from the rest of the kingdom. And with Goongyae pushing his capital relocation, does anybody think he’s not going to want money from Geumsung for a fair share of the cost? Oh this seems like a time bomb being set. Let’s remember this one for future reference. (How funny would it be if this is the issue that forces WG to marry Doyoung!)
So they finally depart, and hey they even had the navy band!
Totally unnecessary to add that image, and it certainly didn't come cheap to set up all of those old-style horns blowing, but what a great visual. And to give some more credit, because I’ve complained about this so often in nighttime scenes in so many series, the departure scene here was expertly lit, not over-lit at all. It looked totally believable, no extra-bright-for-TV garish white lighting from the sides. It absolutely looked authentically like a believable nighttime setting.
Sure hope the invasion episodes are worthy of the buildup episodes. The bar has been set high.
