One of the best episodes so far. Not a lot of big-time action but the plot is really getting extra-interesting. And everything is working well right now—acting, directing, writing, even the music has improved.
Things got very tense when the Dosun script came up. As soon as Goongyae was headed to Yu’s estate you had to think that things would inevitably turn towards Yu’s daughter and WG. But nooo....Wonder why WG brought up the script so calmly and openly, like he didn’t realize it would raise such concern. Maybe he was just trying to take the heat off it preemptively? Whatever, he really didn't need to tell them that it was THE book, just that it was something Dosun had written. Anyway, it was an excellent scene.
Wait a minute, there it is after all. How about you two kids tie the knot, blah blah blah....Kind of a relief that Lord Yu backed off and said "It's a personal decision" when he really could have turned the screws on WG in front of Goongyae. The way he was talking about his daughter before, yecch. And you know what, she was impressive here just for how totally un-awed she was when she was introduced to Goongyae. Polite but totally poised and calm, not intimidated at all. WG is seeming almost pathetic at this point. We get it, you're scarred, but this isn't going away and she's a great catch. Get this guy in therapy ASAP.
What just happened there--Lord Kang adopted a son? The kid must be twenty if he’s a day. Where did he come from? What a strange twist out of the blue.
“I led them to you because a man of virtue should unite our kingdoms and comfort our people.” Aw gee, give the monk a name. He’s playing a big part in the story for the moment. I do appreciate that the writers have been careful not to give names to characters where historical names aren’t known for certain (like Yangil’s two sons-in-law), but when a character becomes critical to a story and hangs around for multiple episodes, it’s almost distracting not to know his or her name.
So the three secret envoys make it to Oh Darin and meet with him. And that meeting scene was absolutely outstanding. Wow. Blew me away. We’ve had some terrific moments in the first fifty episodes but this one may have topped them all. And it didn’t even include any of the major characters. Everything that will happen to everybody in the entire story is riding on what happens in this scene, it’s that important, and it was beautifully done. The pace of it was perfect, and the actor playing Oh did a phenomenal job—you could totally see the gears spinning in his head as he tried to absorb everything that was being thrown at him. One for the highlight reel.
The only thing that seemed odd was that the Koryo guys didn’t make a more reasoned pitch immediately. “What do you want from me?” “Geumsung.” Maybe they were going for shock value right off the bat—these are three smart people and you have to think they’ve planned how they’re going to pitch this—so I guess we wait and see the result.
Kyun-hwon’s sons just can’t do anything right in their father’s eyes. And then having to sit there percolating in humiliation at the meal afterwards, just horrible. Those poor kids. It reminded me of what I’ve read about how Prince Sado was treated by his father Yeongjo.
And their mom is getting a raw deal too. How could any husband forget about her? Geez KH is really getting weird.
Oh Darin: “This could be our chance to get out of the tiger’s cave. We are doomed one way or another.” Great stuff. Just wonderful.
Ending the episode where it was ended was sort of awkward. I figured Doyoung being of a younger generation would be more ready to consider what she overheard and be willing to consider the idea. Didn’t expect her to be smug and dismissive like she was, almost bratty. But we got left in the middle of the scene so maybe it was just needing to find an endpoint and there was no easy place for it. That was really about the only flaw in the whole episode. Can’t wait for 52!
