This series is not the first time the foundation of the Goryeo Dynasty was dramatized onscreen. On 1970, a film titled Taejo Wang Geon was released. I can barely find anything about this one. All that's available are posters and one screenshot. I think its safe to say that the man in the above picture is Gungye.

Very interesting. Did not come across this when I was researching the TV historicals timeline; never heard of it before.
I managed to find a Wikipedia reference for it that gives some names of cast and crew members, but little more than that. Would love to see clips!
(I tried to link the Wikipedia page but there's a comma in the URL and for some reason it doesn't reproduce correctly here on Proboards. Google "Wang Geon the Great" and it's the first result.)

Thanks for finding this! The pictures are very interesting. For some reason they remind me of one of those big Charlton Heston epics from back in the 1950s. I guess the dramatic colors and lighting.
It sure would be nice to have some of those old films and TV series online for viewing. Even without subtitles they'd be interesting to look at.

KMDB has a VOD service, actually - it's just a bit tricky to access unless you know some Korean. Aside from the collection they have, they upload special restorations every month. The most recent one I watched was a really nice restoration of Yeonhwa (1974) with Lee Sun Jae, an adaptation of TBC's daily drama of the same name.
As for series, KBS uploads some of their older ones on YouTube ever so often (they keep the more famous one for their subscription service though)

I take it you do speak some Korean?
We're always looking for historicals to do here in the forum so if you come across something on YouTube with subtitles, by all means let us know. Might be a while before we can get to it (EWG right now, something from Kingdom and a new historical in the coming months) but there isn't much available out there so we will get to it eventually.

I learned some while translating! Sageuks are barely on YouTube these days with the heavy copyright crackdowns but if you haven't already watched it the Great King' Pathway/King of the Wind is still there! www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0odZmjscsgKBS was on an upload spree in the past few months that they now seem to regret, so stuff like 1980's Dance of Breaking Sky and Kim Hye Su's Legend of Chunhyang '88 Olympic Special are all taken down

I watched the first few minutes of this. This is the one about Prince Sado, the show that comes chronologically between Dong Yi and Yi San?

WOW this is quite a find! Are all 34 episodes of this on YouTube? There are no numbers in that YouTuber's titles, unfortunately, but browsing through his video log it does look like the whole series may be there. I did find episode 2, posted right after episode 1...if they're all there then I would absolutely start a board for this and do a viewing as soon as we can fit it in here.
Started watching it just to look in on it and couldn't stop. Don't know anything about how historically accurate this series is but the actor playing Sado also played Yeon Namseng in DJY and did a terrific job playing a different troubled character, so I'd watch it just for that alone.
Anybody else interested in watching this? We're going to get a new historical later this year but maybe we could squeeze this in beforehand, or if not then certainly right after it.

I'd be interested in watching it, if all the episodes are there. May need someone to explain the backstory, or hope it all gets provided. As I recall, the king (Sado's father) was the son of Dong Yi, so was looked down on for being the son of a lowly concubine. I don't know anything about this poisoning of the king's brother. Already confused with all those queens .

Thanks for this--didn't occur to me that he'd have a playlist...duhhhh.....
From what I saw in the first episode they do have some pretty solid narrated texts that explain things about the background. Maybe I'll watch the entire first one and see if we can get enough backstory to follow what's going on.
I still have never watched anything about this time period so I'm extra interested for that reason.
