Another episode with a theme. This one’s theme is Kings Going Loopy.
“The kingdom is full of Koryo descendants. But you need your own people.” Well things have taken a surprising turn here. Goongyae never struck me as someone who would get caught up in some stranger’s vision of grandeur. It’s a bit of a tough sell, the idea that Ahjitae just shows up and Goongyae immediately buys into it all. But if this is what the storyline is going to use to lead to his undoing, it’s a clever idea and we’ll see if they can make it work.
“Relocate your capital, and fill your palace with people of Chungju.” Wow, maybe Ahjitae isn’t just a detached academic after all. Trying to get the capital moved to his city is a brazen power-grab, isn’t it?
“You evil creature!” Didn’t expect Jongkahn to be so forward about it so quickly—kind of figured he’d have kept a cooler head like he usually does--but you can’t blame him. Was actually kind of funny.
One night with Mihyang and Goongyae knocks her up. One night with Yunhwa and Goongyae knocks her up too. Geez this guy is a machine!
But actually now we can explain away Yunhwa’s surprising outburst from the previous episode if we want to. Not to use pregnancy hormones as an excuse but it would be understandable. These things do happen.
Then we go to Bekjae and now KH is making noises about overreaching just like Goongyae is, and his nobles are rumbling just like Goongyae’s are. “His majesty is not the man he was. He has changed beyond all recognition.” And he’s still blaming this sons for what happened at Daeya? I thought he had faced up to reality on that. Yikes!
And let’s face it, he’s in full-on midlife crisis mode, getting all soft and mooshy with the concubine and shunning his family. This was a guy we liked and respected, but ever since he tried to win a fortress siege with a cavalry unit, he needs a good slap in the face.
Intentional or not, the look on WG’s face at the very end was perfect, staring at Goongyae like What has this guy been smoking? Can’t complain about Choi Soo Jong yet, doing fine through 46 episodes.
