Seemed like the goal of this one was to stir the pot! All kinds of things getting ramped up.
Was it just me or did that seem like an awfully small bed for an emperor? And Goongyae wears his eye patch to bed? But what a patient, quiet opening scene for an episode. Takes guts to do that. You don’t see shows doing it any more.
People might think the nightmare sequence was weird but I really liked it. It’s exactly what would be going through Goongyae’s head right now, manifested in a dream. You can argue about how it was presented, but showing Goongyae’s inner psychological conflict is just the kind of thing that’s making this series so good so far.
But ugh here we go again with WG and Yunhwa. WG should have bowed in respect and then gotten the heck out of there; very unwise considering the circumstances. And then when Goongyae showed up, they had nothing to be uncomfortable about so why were they standing there looking all guilty and ashamed? It just made things worse. Plus, a lot of the discomfort would have been avoided if the attendant Suli hadn’t suddenly walked away and left them alone. Why did she do that? There was no good reason, other than to create the tense scene for us. We didn’t need this. We know it’s all going to come out in the open sooner or later, so just let it be until the time is right.
But how about Lord Yu coming through in a pinch. “Well I had a few cups of tea, and...The older I get, the more I need to go.” WG owes him big-time! (Just please don’t pay him in tea.)
And then Yu peddles his own daughter, how about that. WG had better stop squirming in front of Goongyae about marriage because it only increases the danger of a misunderstanding. And why is he squirming at all? He says he’s put Yunhwa in his past and it does seem like he’s telling the truth...so does he just not want to marry anyone else ever? I don’t get the impression that he’s heartbroken to that extent. Is he?
“His majesty has chosen this dangerous man as his successor.” Surprised me that Jongkahn didn’t know about that Dosun stuff already, considering how paranoid he’s been about WG.
It seemed sort of odd that nobody smelled a rat when those Chungju guys just showed up and asked the king to divert his tour. Shouldn’t somebody have gone ahead and checked into it? Yikes, what if they were agents for Shilla or Bekjae? I’m glad it turned out okay but it seemed like a big risk.
For Goongyae, acquiring Ahjitae was perhaps the most important fruit of his tour. Goongyae was inspired by Ahjitae’s notion: The Great Empire of the Orient. As a prince of Shilla, Goongyae had rebuilt Shilla’s rival Koryo. One must assume that Goongyae carried hidden weight of guilt. With this in mind, the notion of building a brand new empire must have hit home for Goongyae.
“Your Majesty, I beg you to show affection to Her Majesty as well.” Uh-oh here’s quite the turn. Has the Daeya Fortress defeat made Kyun-hwon crazy? Neglecting his wife, he’s got a great catch there, what’s he thinking? And drinking too much as well, wow this isn’t like him.
I can understand the queen’s frustration...but to be fair, this is how things go with kings so sharing him with other women is part of the deal, like it or not.
Yi Chi...Originator of the Yeahn Yi clan, his given name would later be changed to “Doe” by Wang Guhn for his meritorious achievements. By devising a method to cross the flooded Gold River, he would provide Wang Guhn’s army with access to the south, thereby enabling attack and triumph over Later Bekjae’s Shim Guhn. His great role in the unification of the Three Kingdoms would earn him the title of “ikchan”, the second most meritorious retainer.
Boo hiss, more unnecessary spoilers! Love the narrated texts but please keep them to the moment. If we’re going to see this stuff we don’t need to be told about it ahead of time. Sheesh.
The people in Ungju should be pissed off. All prepared for the king’s visit and he stiffs them because people from somewhere else block the road. You know what’s going to happen next time Goongyae does a tour? Word about this will get around.
