“General Chu’s main cavalry has been wiped out.” Hey Kyun-hwon, news flash: horses can’t climb walls. You big dummy! Well at least his kid didn’t have to commit suicide right there in front of everybody. Sheesh, first battle, does what his commander orders, and is supposed to die for it? Kyun-hwon was sounding like a Klingon! And then the commander shows up alive, and KH forgives him and blames his own poor judgment? Geez that kid is gonna need some serious therapy.
“I’m afraid his insight surpasses mine.” All of the reaction and reflection and analysis in the aftermath of the defeat, it was really well written. Just wonderful to have a series that writes characters that are sophisticated and thoughtful and evolving.
“This is hardly necessary.” And then the merchant grabs the gold it like it’s going to run away, that was funny. But it’s interesting to see the process of gathering information through merchants. And that one merchant’s reference to “Khitan leader Yeh-lu A-pao-chi,” turns out this is actually a big deal because that leader is the founder of the Khitan Liao Dynasty:

...which we encountered in Iron Empress.
Eunbu: “Heaven is fair. Yangil was strong, but not smart.” Goongyae: “Do not speak ill of him. It is man’s nature to be covetous.” More of the same excellent writing in this scene.
“That was unwarranted. What was the need to torch the villages when the enemy leader was already dead?” See, I TOLD you guys the big boss wouldn’t like that.
The nighttime scene with Mihyang finding the necklace—the music was almost like it was an operatic tragedy. Well-written but unusual for this series.
This was another very good episode, but the ending...Goongyae makes Mihyang come to a celebration banquet and wants to know how she likes coming back to her home town and seeing it torched into ashes? What does he think she’ll say? It didn’t occur to anybody in the entire room that she might have a problem with all this? I hope everyone backs down and cuts her a break when the next episode starts.
So we bookended this episode with people getting raw deals.
p.s. Jongkahn: “It is our job to analyze these critical data.” Okay that’s on the subtitler...but if anybody ever wants to start a huge argument here, just start using “these” and “those” with “data” instead of “this” or “that.” Grrrrrrrrrrrr....
