QUICK SUMMARY
The prince and Mu-young reach the clinic and find it deserted--and eerily quiet all around. Not only that, the building is locked from the inside and bamboo spear-spikes have been placed everywhere, inside and outside, as if to keep people away. The two men get inside and eventually make a gruesome discovery: lots of corpses, all in bizarre condition and all pushed snugly under floorboards, as if to hide them. They go get help...
...Soldiers arrive to investigate and to haul the corpses to the compound of Cho Beom-pal, the newly appointed local magistrate. A suspect is quickly identified: Yeong-sin, the soldier who we met in the previous episode. (Yes, the stew chef, blecch.) Apparently he’s been seen in the area in recent days, rounding up bamboo. As the search for Yeong-sin begins, the prince and Mu-yeong leave the compound to continue searching for Dr. Lee, who they had come here to find and who was not among the corpses.
Back in the capital, we meet the head of the Sungkyunkwan academy, who’s talking with two of his scholars about how to stop the torture and deaths of scholars that’s happening right now thanks to Cho Hak-ju. One of the lead court attendants shows up and tips him off that a dead body was found in the king’s palace and that apparently Cho is keeping whatever happened a secret. The scholars wonder if this might give them an opening to remove Cho from power.
A brief glimpse of the king’s palace. Something is being hauled out of there by four attendants. From the blood on the cloth and the weight of the thing you wonder if it’s a body. Yes it is; it’s taken to a nearby river and dumped overboard with a stone tied to it. As it sinks, we see it’s not alone. Dozens of other bodies are already down there. What the heck?
The prince and Mu-yeong have found a local supplier of medicinal herbs who gives them surprising news: a physician named Seo-bi survived the clinic massacre and visited him just yesterday. They head off northward to a mountainous place called Frozen Valley, where the supplier suspects she might be. And yes, she’s there, dazed and exhausted, blaming the clinic tragedy on some sort of “resurrection plant” that can bring the dead back to life. She’s terrified to learn that the corpses at the clinic were discovered and moved. “They are not dead,” she says, and will wake up soon and attack people. And the resurrection plant? Not only has it caused the clinic tragedy, but it apparently had the same effect on a man in the capital—that’s what Lee told her. The prince quickly realizes that she’s talking about the king. But Lee also told her that the plant could hold the key to stopping all this. And Lee’s medical records are still intact at the clinic. They decide that the prince will go get the records while Seo-bi and Mu-yeong rush to the compound.
Autopsies have begun at the compound. A grim finding: bite markes that look human. Just then Yeong-sin shows up in a panic. He had returned to the clinic with more bamboo, and upon finding it open and the bodies removed, has run here as fast as he could. Stop the autopsies and lock up the corpses, he screams—but after putting up a huge fight with the compound’s guards (he’s a heck of a fighter) he’s overpowered and jailed by the annoyed magistrate.
Uh-oh, Cho Beom-il and two of his men have made it to Dongnae and are waiting for the prince at the clinic, to arrest him. Demanding answers, the prince gets Beom-il to tell him that the king is still alive but “his mental capacity is not exactly there.” And that the goal of the Cho clan is simply to keep him alive until his child is born. Angry words escalate into sword-swings—and eventually Beom-il gets the better of the duel....
Yeong-sin is being interrogated as Mu-yeong and Seo-bi arrive. “Once the sun sets,” she frantically tells the magistrate as villagers look on and stare at the corpses, “they will rise and maul people to death.” But the magistrate only laughs and scoffs, and orders her jailed. The sun is setting so we shall see, won’t we.
Hey that’s the king! We finally see the king. He doesn’t look good. As in, not alive. This is a very confusing scene we’ve jumped into. It must be a flashback because Dr. Lee is there. So is the queen, and her father Cho Hak-ju. He’s dead, Dr. Lee says, but the other two tell him he’s wrong and it’s his duty to keep the king alive—for a month, until the queen’s child is born. The strangest line in the series so far: Cho tells him, “Just do what you did three years ago.” Huh?!? Well we don’t get time to ponder that, because the king twitches twice and then instantly jumps to his feet and makes the most awful noise. And his face has become horribly distorted. Fortunately he’s chained to the bed—hmmm how long has he been in this state?
Guess what, Seo-bi spoke the truth. The sun has set and the corpses are stirring. And rising. And yes, they start eating people. Screams everywhere as the villagers scatter. These zombies can move surprisingly fast. In the confusion Yeong-sin manages to bust out of his cell and escape.
Back at the clinic, Beom-il has a sword to the prince’s throat when suddenly the zombie corpse of Dr. Lee appears and manages to kill Beom-il and one of his soldiers, despite a sword in its back and multiple wounds. It can’t be stopped! The other soldier flees, but the prince is cornered inside. Fortunately he escapes with a fortuitious slash that cut’s off the corpses head. THAT finally stops it. He runs towards the magistrate’s compound...and is stunned to see the entire town completely engulfed in flames.
