Again with all of the laughing to start an episode. What’s so funny? Tell us please.
Oh wait, they’re drinking. Never mind. Could be anything.
But wait, that’s all we saw of the wedding? It didn’t carry forward from the last episode? Wow, after so much effort went into staging it we didn’t see any sort of formal marriage rite. Surprised at that. We didn’t need the whole thing, of course...but you figured we’d see more than the introductions.
“I feel sympathy for General Wang..” Aaaaand there it is. Still waiting to hear Jongkahn’s reasoning beyond just some silly desire to cripple WG emotionally. But maybe that’s all there is to it.
A rosary, a burn mark on the arm, and “Do not expect the affection of a man from me.” Wow, that’s one heck of a wedding night. Poor Yunhwa. At least the arm-burning wasn’t as bad as I thought it was. From the way they presented it when Mihyang got it, it sounded like a more significant scarring.
WG: “Father often brought me to the beach, and told me about the glory of the legendary general Jang Bogo.” Stop it! You stop that right now! So help me, I will turn this car around!
“Wang Guhn was their master in the past.” Not really, his dad hasn’t been dead long enough. In fact I’ll bet they hadn’t had even one of those annual prayer ceremonies since Ryung’s passing. This seems like a continuity error.
“You leave me speechless with your kindness.” Yeah that was a terrific gesture by Yunhwa, going herself to visit Mihyang and being so nice and empathetic. Absolutely first-class. They keep saying WG is the “hero” of this series but right now Yunhwa is a much more sympathetic character. Mihyang is up there too. Can’t say enough good things about that scene and what an enlightened person Yunhwa showed she is. I sure hope she becomes more than just the broken-heart storyline token woman because she has a lot to offer.
Hey it’s the old kook again! Love it when weird people show up randomly. But that moment of introduction sure had a lot of unspoken weight to it, didn’t it? Like he knew plenty.
Two narrated texts. The first:
The back-and-forth in Ajakae’s head that we got to listen to, nice piece of writing.
Also enjoyed seeing the foreigners in their foreign clothes showing respect to the king at the ceremony. Again, an unnecessary extra thing but it added authenticity.
“Empress, pour General Wang a drink.” Oh come on Goongyae, why don’t you do it? He’s the one who should be showing WG the respect out there in public, at the ceremony that WG arranged. That was dumb. Of course we know why, it’s all for milking the broken-heart story, but enough is enough. We get the idea. If this storyline isn’t going anywhere for now then pour him the drink and move on please.
But for the most part a very good episode. Also the music worked well in this one. Certainly has improved a lot.

Two narrated texts. The first:
Dosun was a high monk who many called the Father of Geomancy, who was born in now Cholla Province in the late Unified Shilla period. From the Zen sect, he became enlightened at an early age, and caused a sensation about the world of enlightenment. But what he is most famous for is his predictions of Wang Guhn’s birth and Wang Guhn’s construction of Koryo. It is said that these were his last words: “Why do you look so sad? Lift off your sorrows. It is honorable to live and die as you are mant to. What is there to be sad [about]? Life and death are equal.” It was in the March of year 898, one year after Wang Guhn’s father Wang Ryung’s death. Losing his father and his mentor back-to-back must have been a terrible blow for Wnag Guhn. Kyun-hwon was also much aggrieved at the news of Dosun’s death.Nice segue into the visit to the salt factory, and into the second narrated text:
The method used to process salt at this time was not by evaporation. Salt was obtained by a complicated process of boiling the brine from salt springs. Some believe that the second empress of King Wang Guhn, empress Janghwa, was the daughter of a wealthy salt tycoon named Oh.That was very, very interesting. They actually recreated the whole process to show us, right down to the boiling brine and the period implements. LOVED it! They didn’t have to do it but it added something authentic and made the episode better. And wow that’s quite a teaser there, about Oh’s daughter, who we haven’t even met yet...are we going to see that? Almost inconceivable at this point how we get from here to that. Good thing there’s 170 more episodes, gonna need them.
