With this episode we’re caught up to where we were in the regular weekly schedule. Again, apologies for getting behind over the holidays.
Wow this episode sure didn’t hold back, did it. The queen dying, as sorry as I was to lose her, it really was time. The final scenes with the queen and princes, maybe some people felt like it went on for too long but for the most part I thought the whole sequence was good. Can’t say the same about the other death, but we’ll get to that.
“I’m a sinner to you and I made my mother die.” Yeomong could add a really interesting element to the story, with what he went through at such a young age.
“So you want me to die in place of Yeochan?” How could the queen even suggest such a thing? Talk about playing favorites.
Why is Annoying Girl sitting out there in the yard for the sentencing? This doesn’t concern her. I don’t ever remember seeing a queen in such a situation. Her presence is becoming extra-annoying lately. And that scene later in the episode where she invites Yeohwa for tea and then starts badgering her, yet another example of how she’s not even in Yeohwa’s league.
“Don’t let your queens cry. All troubles begin with a woman’s tears.” Hmm I wonder if that will come back to haunt Yeogu.
“You’re going to die. What’s the use of holding a grudge? Go in comfort.” Wow that is incredibly generous of the second queen to be so forgiving to the woman who stabbed her. Have to admire her.
All right, now for this Yeohwi business. A big thumbs down. First of all, why do you want to kill off a guy like him after investing half the series developing his character? He was about the last person I’d have expected the series to bump off at this point. A real shame to lose such an interesting person and someone who was a deeply sympathetic character. You have to trust that the writers have a plan for it but wow it sure better be a good one.
Second of all, was the idea that his mind snapped and he temporarily lost all sense of good judgment? You can certainly feel for him, having to stand there and watch his mother and brothers sobbing and saying their final goodbyes, and then holding his mother’s dead body. But didn’t it seem awfully out of character for him to just go charging into the middle of all of those guards and think he could lead his brothers out of there and escape? Come on, the guy was a commander in some important military actions. He wouldn’t crumble into that kind of reckless foolishness. No way.
And third, if you’re going to bump him off, at least give the guy a better death. Wi Birang just shooting him in cold blood? Where was Yeohwi going to go with that stab wound in his abdomen and a courtyard full of armed soldiers watching his every move? That was awful and it was ridiculous that nobody called him out for it. Wi should be facing severe discipline. He killed a freaking prince! Ugh.
So now there’s a weird pall hanging over everything with his loss in such a cheap, wasteful way. And now a bunch of them are going to try to kill Yeohwa? Seriously? More of this bickering about queens, good grief. Let’s hope this thing doesn’t go completely off the rails because it sure could.
