Yeah these kinds of scholarly books tend to be very, very, very, very pricey.
No doubt the day will come when the whole thing will be translated and available freely online. Probably far in the future, though.

Thanks for the heads-up on that...looks like it's reasonably priced too, although that may just be for members or preferred customers or whatever they have set up on that site.
p.s. Amazon is still asking $43 for the previous volume, in paperback. Hopefully that will come down at some point.

So my copy finally arrived.
Learned some notable things the series left out.
Wonjong came to hate Kim Jun after Kim Jun stole palace goods from a ship that was mean for the king. It was mentioned in Henthorn’s book about the Mongol invasions, but the sources go into more depth regarding it. Basically what happened was a house slave of Kim Ae, Kim Jun’s son, had a disagreement with with the man in charge of the shipment. When he landed, the slave slandered the man to Ae, who reported it to his father, causing him to seize the goods and divide it amongst the Night Patrols. When Kim Jun visited the king, Wonjong showed him a record of the goods that was being carried, which scared Kim Jun enough to give it stolen stuff back. There was tension and disagreements before regarding the Mongols but this incident added fuel to the fire.
Also, Kim Jun’s wife was not a nice lady. It is recorded that “his house was several kil and width of his land was over 100 paces. His wife still unsatisfied said ‘my Brave man’s eyes are really small like this’”
I mentioned it in another post, but the reason the relationship between Kim Jun and I’m Yeon soured? Two incidents. Im Yon had a land dispute with one of his foster brothers and Kim Jun took his biological son’s side. Later after Im Yeon’s wife killed her slave, Kim Jun said “This woman’s character is violent and should be exiled far away”
If they kept the incident regarding Im Yeon’s wife’s crime, they probably would have brought up Kim Jun’s slave background and how being a slave sucks, which the show doesn’t shut up about

I am baffled by some of the translation choices for this book. Some sentences are either not well written or are just plain wrong.
I wonder if Hugh HW Kang’s absence led to a decline in quality.
