PLOT
Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki) is the captain of the special forces. He catches a motorcycle thief with Sergeant Major Seo Dae-young (Jin Goo). The thief is injured during his capture and is sent to the hospital. Dae-young realises his cellphone was stolen by the thief and goes to the hospital to retrieve his cellphone. In the emergency room, Si-jin meets Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo) for the first time. He falls in love with her immediately. Mo-yeon mistakenly assumes Si-jin is part of thief's criminal gang. He proves to her that he is a soldier with the help of army doctor Yoon Myeong-joo (Kim Ji-won). Si-jin and Mo-yeon begin to date, but due to their jobs, their dates don't go well. Si-jin takes an order to lead his soldiers on a peacekeeping mission to the fictional country of Urk. Meanwhile, Mo-yeon becomes upset that she fails to become a professor due to a colleague's privileged background. When Si-jin and Mo-yeon meet again, they talk about their views on life and realise how different they are. Si-jin, as a soldier, kills to protect lives and Mo-yeon, as a doctor, tries to save all lives. They say their goodbyes. Eight months later, Mo-yeon rebuffs the sexual advances of hospital chairman Han Suk-won (Tae In-ho) and as a result is assigned to lead a medical team in Urk. There, Si-jin and Mo-yeon meet again. Very interesting article about this series that I stumbled across online. Apparently it's hugely popular in other places besides South Korea. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- North Koreans watching South’s ‘Descendants of the Sun’ TV drama By AT Editor on April 13, 2016 in Asia Times News & Features, China, Koreas, Southeast Asia Seems even folks in North Korea are watching the mega-hit TV drama, “Descendants of the Sun.” A North Korean defector recently told South Korea’s Kyunghyang Shimmun newspaper that his family well north of the DMZ had watched the first eight episodes of the 16-part KBS-TV series on the Internet. “Some North Koreans had begun to get love-sick with the drama,” the report said. “More smartphones have been distributed to people and better Internet networks have been established compared to the past,” the local newspaper quoted a North Korean expert as saying. Though North Korea is one of the most isolated states in the world and computers and cell phones are scarce, it’s still possible for locals to go online. Political and military leaders and their families can access what amounts to a small intranet service that includes a search engine, email and carefully vetted access to content outside North Korea. Though Pyongyang keeps a watchful eye, it apparently wasn’t enough to stop northern fans of Descendants from downloading a drama that’s taken Asian audiences by storm. Episodes have already been downloaded over 2 billion times in China and are currently South Korea’s No. 1 TV show. The US-based video-streaming website Viki is stoking its popularity by distributing subtitled versions of the series available in 32 languages, including English, Chinese, Malaysian and Vietnamese. “Descendants of the Sun” spins the romantic tale of a young army captain in South Korea’s special forces named Yoo Si-jin (played by Song Joong-ki) and a comely woman doctor, Kang Mo-yeon (played by Song Hye-kyo). Yoo is assigned to a peacekeeping mission to a fictional country named Uruk. Dr. Kang is the leader of a medical team on a humanitarian mission. The story focuses on the couple as they cope with the mission’s challenges and fall in love with each other. The hugely successful drama has moved from the entertainment into the political realm. China’s Ministry of Public Security is warning Chinese viewers against watching too much of Descendants, while Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha is urging Thais to watch it. Beijing worries that obsessive viewing of the series will stir up social ills, while the Thai PM loves the show’s stress on patriotism and sacrifice for one’s country. Some scenes in the Chinese version, including one showing a fight between South Korean and North Koreans soldiers, were reportedly deleted to please Chinese censors. The drama, which is nearing a climax, is also proving immensely popular with rank-and-file Chinese People’s Liberation Army soldiers. The drama’s final episode airs on April 14. atimes.com/2016/04/north-koreans-watching-souths-descendants-of-the-sun-tv-drama/

ajk, This is a very interesting report and views from Thailand and China. I am not surprised N. Koreans, including the dictator Kim, are watching S. Korean dramas and its popularity because most smugglers' popular smuggling item,in N. Korea, is the Video CDs(surprisingly they still exist) that contain Korean Dramas and musics. Despite the fact the K-pop and K-Drama watchers in N. Korea can be prosecuted with public execution, the popularity is growing and they are taking risks to follow the movement of the K-wave. It is very interesting to see how a country that is merely the size of the lake Michigan influences other countries by its culture and entertainment contents.
By the way, are any of you attending Drama Fever event that is happening next week?

Hi there, I tried this drama a while back and I didn't last the first episode. Don't know what the big deal was. When I was in Korea in July my cousin told me the lead couple were due to get married. He thought I was gonna be all bummed cuz he thought the lead male was one of my favorites (he sure isn't). And I wouldn't be sad if any of my faves got married.

Yeah... some people said that it will get better after episode 5 but I am now in episode 9 but still feel bored to death...I might drop this one. I didn't even feel the chemistry between the main couple - everything about it is just boring for me. So I wonder why this became so popular.
Yeah the actor and actress that played the main couple and main lead in this series are getting married. They developed some feelings for each other while making this drama.

Well Jin Goo is in it, so that did it for me, i made it as far as episode 3 .Just cannot take anything he is in seriously . I can see why The Good Doctor is a massive hit, but not this, it seems to forced and vapid .
