This is a list of all of the characters appearing in the series so far. The number in parentheses is the episode number of the character's debut.
Most of the character names are only being subtitled in Hangul. I'm doing my best to translate them but I don't speak or read Korean so there will probably be some mistakes. Any errors or omissions that anybody spots, please do let me know.
ROYALS
Lady Gahyeon / Princess Sohyeon (1) - daughter of King Taejong. In Ep6 we learn that she was married at a very young age but that her husband died some time ago.
King Taejong (1) - Third king of Joseon. Cedes his throne to Prince Chungnyeong in Ep8. Dies in Ep11.
Prince Yangnyeong (1) - First surviving son of King Taejong and Queen Wongyeong.
Prince Chungnyeong ("Makdong") / King Sejong (1) - Third surviving son of King Taejong and Queen Wongyeong. Becomes king in Ep8. In Ep24 we're told that he died in 1450.
Prince Hyoryeong (1) - Second surviving son of King Taejong and Queen Wongyeong.
King Taejo (7) – First king of Joseon. Seen only in flashback.
Yi Hyang (12) - First son of King Sejong and Queen Soheon. The future King Munjong.
Princess Gyeonghye (12) - Daughter of King Taejong's older brother Lee Bangu (so King Taejong's niece and King Sejong's cousin).
Yi Yu ("Jinpyeong", "Suyang") (19) - Second son of King Sejong and Queen Soheon.
Queen Soheon (19) - First wife of King Sejong. Mother to Yi Hyang and Yi Yu.
MINISTERS/OFFICIALS
Jang Kibae (1) - Mayor of Dongrae. In Ep4 we learn that he is dead.
Hwang Hui ("Gubu") (1) - Minister serving King Taejong. In Ep3 we learn that he was sent into exile for somehow defending or protecting the then-crown prince Yangnyeong. In Ep10 Taejong brings him back from exile to serve King Sejong. In Ep15 he's identified as Second State Councilor. In Ep24 we're told that he died in 1452, two years after Sejong's death.
Yu Taeksang (1) - Head of Astronomy Division under Taejong; longtime official who's served in Astronomy Division since Goryeo dynasty. Commits suicide in Ep7 after the rebel plot he was leading is exposed.
Ji Gyeongchan (1) - Official in Astronomy Division. Assassinated in Ep5 while discovering a secret message in Goryeo's stone star chart.
Choi Bok (1) - Official in Astronomy Division. Removed from his post in Ep11 but later put to work by Sejong, assisting JYS in building an observatory. In Ep15 he's identified as "Vice Head" of the Astronomy Division.
Jang Huije (1, identified 2) - Son of Jang Kibae; cousin of JYS. First seen as a bratty rich kid; as an adult becomes a Ministry of Rites official. In Ep8 becomes an official in the Astronomy Division. As of Ep15 he's identified as "Head" of the Astronomy Division. Resigns in Ep18. Murdered in Ep21 by an "Elite Group" scholar named Park.
Yi Cheon (1) - Official at government arsenal; close friend/associate of Jang Seongbae; has known King Taejong since childhood. In Ep21 he's identified as Minister of Rites. Later in Ep21 he's Pyeongan Army commander and is guarding the country's northern border. In Ep24 we jump briefly to 1451 and see him die peacefully.
Jeon Bacheon (2) - Official in Astronomy Division. Killed as a traitor in Ep7.
Jo Malseng (3) – Minister servings King Taejong and Sejong.
Ha Yeon (3) – Minister (secretary of some sort) serving Kings Taejong and Sejong. As of Ep15 he's the governor of Pyeongan province. In Ep24 we're told that he died in 1453.
Heo Jo (3) – Minister serving King Taejong; in Ep9 we see him as Minister of Rites serving King Sejong.
Mang Saseong (3) – Minister of Public Works serving King Taejong. In Ep15 he's identified as Third State Councilor.

Jeong Cho (5) - Inspector General serving King Taejong. In Ep12 he's become the governor of Hamgil province.
Jeong Heumji (5) - Censor General serving King Taejong.
Jeong Inji (5) - Secretary serving King Taejong. In Ep12 he's become chief scholar at the Jibheyonjeon royal library.
Seong Siil (8) - Official in Astronomy Division.
Kim Gunam (8) - Official in the Hall of Worthies. One of the group responsible for writing a threatening message in one of King Sejong's books.
Sim On (8) - High official under Taejong and Sejong; also Sejong's father-in-law. Shown only in a flashback sequence, committing suicide while under arrest for treason.
Seong Saguk (11) - Lower official first seen during the Joseon delegation's visit to Ming. Later assigned to work helping construct JYS's observatory. In Ep19 is assisting Jo Gwang's attempt to thwart the Astronomy Division's eclipse prediction.
Jong Chisu (11) - Official in the Hall of Worthies. One of the group responsible for writing a threatening message in one of King Sejong's books.
Gwak Inbae (11) - Official in the Hall of Worthies. One of the group responsible for writing a threatening message in one of King Sejong's books.
Yu Chol (11) - Official in the Hall of Worthies. One of the group responsible for writing a threatening message in one of King Sejong's books.
Ahn Kilsang (11) - Official in the Hall of Worthies. One of the group responsible for writing a threatening message in one of King Sejong's books.

Jo Dusik (15, identified 16) - Mayor of Namyang.
Jeong Hyoseung (18) - Scholar at the Jibheyonjeon royal library. Dies of exposure in Ep18 from protesting against JYS's water/ball clock.
Kim Beomrae (18) - Scholar at the Jibheyonjeon royal library. Dies of exposure in Ep18 from protesting against JYS's water/ball clock.
Choi Manri (21) - Scholar at the Jibheyonjeon royal library.
Song Samun, Shin Sukju (21) - Two scientific or medical specialists of some sort, seen working with Sejong in developing the Hangul alphabet.
Mr. Park of Unhyeon-dong (21) - Younger "Elite Group" scholar who goes to Jang Huije's home in Ep21 and murders him.
An Yo, Choi Heonam (22) - Appear to be engineering or construction specialists; working on construction of the king's new palanquin.
Jo Sunsaeng (22) - Official overseeing planning of the king's new palanquin with JYS.
(couldn't translate name) (23) - Official at the construction yard where the king's new palanquin was being assembled.
Im Hyodon (sp?) (23) - Appears to be an engineering or construction specialist; seen at the construction yard where the king's new palanquin was being assembled.
OTHERS
Jang Youngsil (1) - First seen as a little boy named Eunbok. Born and grew up with slave status; at the beginning of Ep12 we learn that King Sejong liberated him and gave him an official's rank. In Ep21 we learn he's reached rang Daehogun, a level 3 official (translated variously as Second Deputy Commander or Grand Royal Guard). Imprisoned in Ep23 after the palanquin he helped assemble for Sejong breaks down.
Eunwol (1) - Eunbok's mother. In Ep3 we see her die, in a recent flashback; Kim Hakju had pushed her off a cliff and she died of her injuries.
Jang Songhwi (1) - Eunbok's father; astronomer; was a minister during Goryeo dynasty.
Jang Seongbae (1) - Noble of some sort; brother of Jang Songwhi.
Seokgu (2) - Childhood friend of JYS. In Ep16 we learned that he and Eulseon are married.
Koh Gilsu (2) - Trader; friend of JYS.
Kim Hakju (3) - soldier, friend of Jang Huije.
Kang Jangru (3) –Palace employee who monitors the palace’s water clock.
Eulseon (6) - Servant of Princess Sohyeon. In Ep16 we learned that she and Seokgu are married.
Gwak Su (6) - Head stonemason in the construction of Goryeo's stone star chart. Assassinated by Jang Huije in Ep6.
Park Hyowon (11) - Astronomer working in secret with JYS. Killed by Jang Huije and Kim Hakju in Ep14.
Im Myeongdeok (11) - Astronomer working in secret with JYS. Killed by Jang Huije and Kim Hakju in Ep14.
Oh Pilgyo (15) - One of JYS's assistants both during his time in the rural countryside and after returning to the capital. In Ep22 he's liberated by the king (so he previously was of slave class). Imprisoned in Ep23 after the palanquin he helped assemble for Sejong breaks down.
Jo Gwang (previously Master Chungbo) (18) - Former religious scholar who lost his title during King Taejong's reign as a punishment for stirring up unrest among scholars. Dies by Byeon Daechi's sword in Ep23, after successfully masterminding the sabotage of Sejong's new palanquin; he asked Byeon to end his life.
Byeon Daechi (18) - Goon-type assistant serving Jo Gwang.
Pangu, Choi Yul, Bae Gangchun, Shil (partially identified 21, more fully identified 22, seen earlier) - Members of JYS's workshop crew. In Ep22 Bae is liberated by the king (so he previously was of slave class). All are imprisoned in Ep23 after the palanquin they helped assemble for Sejong breaks down.
Seokgu's son (24) - Name not provided. Seen assisting his father in their business.
MING
Ma Bongkol (sp?) (9) - Ming official.
Yun Bong (9) - Ming high official. Apparently of Joseonese descent and was selected to serve the Ming royals. Has some sort of charge or authority over the Ming royal observatory.
Ju Taegang (9) - Royal family member; has title of Lord.
Ju Buryeong (9) - Daughter of Ju Taegang.
Mu San (10) - Yun Bong's bodyguard.
Yun Jungbu (12) - Yun Bong's brother. Apparently (based on Ep21) a Joseon citizen.
Xuanzong / Xuande Emperor (15) - Ming emperor 1425 - 1435.
Yingzong / Zhengtong Emperor (22) - Ming emperor 1435 - 1449 and 1457 - 1464.
Wang Jin (22) - Senior official/advisor to Zhengtong Emperor.
