"Your Majesty" is addressed to King or Queen. "Your Highness" to Prince or Princess.
Now Bo, I'm not an expert in the Korean language, not by the stretch of even my imagination. But from what I hear myself, "Jun-hwa" means "Your Majesty" or "King"; and "Ju-hwa" (without the n) means "Your Highness" or "Prince."
Again I'm not positive, but this word is applied to both King and Queen. Not certain what it means exactly but probably same as "Your Majesty"?...
Yes. I spelled it as "Jun-hwa" above. Same word.
I think I heard this word before too but I don't recall now what it means. I would say I'll ask my mom and report back to you but I never remember to ask her anything...

LOL...I hear Peja (pronounced in a Spanish fashion--pay-haaaaaaaah with suitably respectful, long emphasis LOL) in shows where they are going back to earlier dynasties or versions of Korea--like they used it in Jumong to address the old king.
Thanks, that explanation is very, very helpful.

You're very welcome, Bo. Anytime I can help...
Episode 46
Haven't any of these people heard of the expression, "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time"? I mean if you're plotting to assassinating the King, shouldn't you be somewhat prepared to get caught and to be executed?? Geez, these cry babies were making me sick. That Jung was the only dignified one among them.
Episode 47
I didn't like it when Jung's empty poison bowl rolled over to touch Hong's foot. It looked like a foreshadow of sorts. Please no, don't let anything happen to Hong. I love him!!!!
Episode 48
How did Uncle finally win over Mak Soon? How come they skipped that part?? One minute she's still looking at him all funny cuz she knows he's a eunuch and then next minute Uncle is telling Dae Su that he's getting married to her! Ha? What? They "yada yada"ed the fun part!!
Yay, the three stooges got level five!! (whatever that means)

'kay, just noticed something. You say "mameh" is both king/queen, so it must be Your Majesty, but it is also used to address high consorts, for instance, in Dae Jang-geum when her little friend becomes a concubine DJG runs over there right quick and bows to her, saying, "Mameh." Pretty sure it just means Your Specialness. LOL. Oh, wait...maybe she is called "ma-ma-nim"...you know, I'd better go back and check that. Or maybe truth will hear about this conversation (LOL) and rescue us... Truth! Truth will shed the light! By three stooges you mean the guys in the armed forces who are "adopted" by Yi San? It's been awhile, but isn't Daesu one of them? I suppose you must be calling them that because there are three, but those guys were actually pretty sharp, weren't they? I've been amused to see that you really love Hong. I found him unbearable, what an arrogant pr*ck. Different tastes I guess. I don't remember how Uncle convinced her. If I recall, I wasn't sure how he managed it either.

I referred to them as the three stooges only pertaining to that particular episode cuz that's when they were all running around like chickens with their heads cut off, thinking they were being "discarded" by the King - until they find out they made level five. Yes, Dae Su is one of the three. I find him sort of idiotic.
To dislike Hong is your prerogative, of course, but to call him a name like "pr*ck" I find rather disturbing. What has Hong done to deserve you calling him that? Unless he commits some despicable act after episode 48 that I haven't seen yet? He's an upstanding, hard-working, highly intelligent man who lives to serve his king and country. Yes, he's arrogant at times, but only to people who deserve it. How does that make him a "pr*ck"? Ah well, maybe you and I have differing definition of the word.
Anyway, I love him. Right now my like for him surpasses my like for Yi San the king. (*Gasp* - did I really say that?)

No, it's nothing like that. I just hated him from the moment he showed up on the screen. Similar to your reaction to the bald guy in Assorted Gems, I guess, just a visceral reaction. I thought he was an arrogant pr*ck. I stick with the word. [And no, I'm not saying they are equal actors or characters, just that we had a similar reaction to the two. Um, separately, opposite...LOL...help...] As for the three stooges, you're right, they were rather silly in that situation, weren't they. Daesu is a complete booby. I agree wholeheartedly.

PS - I was looking for info on the drama "Wonderful Days" starring Lee Seo-jin because of Knov1's mention of the theme song in his music thread, and DF does not have it, but they DID have this photo of our Seo-jin which I assume was pulled from a Calvin Klein print ad: this is the image file(Not Safe For Work, but not by too much. ) I thought I'd put it here for Jewel--I think it was her, or was it Birdy?--who thought he was a cutie. Little cheesecake for the girlz. Couldn't find one for Hong. Sorry. Bo

I found episode 49 so boring, I don't know why. But then 50 thru 55 were so exciting, I just whizzed through them. They seemed to be filled with Hong.
That Concubine Hong is some piece of work! Wow! (Too bad she's Hong's sister.) But she does liven up the old palace, I tell ya. Poor Song Yeon. I was crying with her at the end of episode 51 and then was so happy when the king showed up. Yay! And then in epi 52, never loved the queen as much as when she walked in on the concubine abusing Song Yeon and really let that crazy girl have it and rescued SY.
That whole story of the king barring Hong from the cabinet meeting was so exciting. I couldn't believe the needless suffering Hong went through (not to mention me as well) just because the king failed to simply explain to Hong that he barred him from the meetings cuz he was protecting him. Geez...
Loved epi 53. It was like a good little murder mystery novel. Fun.
I have to say I like the lady attendant to the queen so much. First I hated her cuz she was so mean to Song Yeon but now I like her. When she was crying cuz they heard that the concubine was pregnant I totally understood her. I would have too cuz I love the queen.
Just about finished with epi 55. I wish Hong didn't join forces with the dowager queen. I don't feel good about this at all.
edit: Oopsies, didn't even start epi 55 yet. Just checked. I meant just finished epi 54.

I am totally hooked. Can't stop watching. Just finished episode 57. Now I know why that poison bowl rolled over and touched Hong's foot. It was a foreshadowing. My heart is breaking for him. What one lie can cause.
Thank goodness I'm not on schedule tomorrow or I'd be a dead woman.

LOL. You are totally killing me. I'm sending help (as requested in the "who am I" thread), but it's all psychic. Here it is: For the low, low price of ONE DOLLAR, I will petition the gods to change Korean history for you. You're WELCOME.
Actually, here's what I said about Ep.57 two years ago (since you watched it already): "I was shocked when Won Bin [NB: Concubine Hong's official name] revealed she knew all about the plan. I figured it was the doctor’s ad lib to get out of a spot, but this is totally worse. Sec’y Hong is the root of all evil. I knew that. I can’t figure out why these idiots decided to go after the least likely person. I thought they’d go after Song and Chobi or something."
So apparently I thought Won Bin might have made an innocent mistake and it was all Hong's doing. Boy, was I ever wrong. (I wrote those things immediately after watching each episode, so I know I'm not "spoiling" you here.)
And, yes, I agree with you. Everything that has happened to Hong so far after coming into the court can be traced to how San treated him. He was given too much free reign and it went to his head. San should have known better. The character of Hong was a brilliant man, but he needed guidance, and he wasn't given any.
I loved Lady Min. Yes, she was aggravating at first, she always seemed unduly suspicious, but that was her job after all. The Queen's head lady has a responsibility to the Queen, and that's is her absolute first function.

I thought the same about the doctor. At the time I thought how stupid can the writers be. No one in their right mind would choose the queen to blame. Even if she were guilty they wouldn't dare but when she's innocent as a babe unborn, really? Then when I found out my beloved Hong was the orchestrator of it all, I was floored. How could he? It's understandable to lie and cheat to cover up for your sister, but to purposely frame an innocent person to take someone else's punishment? And the queen at that?? Unbelievable. Is this all true? Did this all really happen?
I'm on episode 60 and I can no longer respect or love Hong. It saddens me so much but what can I do? I couldn't believe my ears when he scolded the queen for not visiting his dying sister. First of all, the queen didn't know that the harpy was dying and secondly, did he forget so easily that he and his sister tried to frame her and that if they had succeeded and the king had believed them, the queen could've been stripped of her title and could've been exiled? What does he mean the queen was to harsh to his sister for a "mistake"??
Very well put. I think the queen should have revealed the whole truth to the king too, regarding the whole pregnancy thing and how deeply the deceit really went.
Back to "Yi San." Can't stop watching. Watching while eating breakfast. Watching while doing dishes. Watching while doing laundry. Watching while about to eat lunch...

Episode 66
Am shedding copious tears for Hong. I guess I still love him...

Finished!
Ohmgosh, it was just too sad. After Hong died, everything became pretty colorless for me. Particularly the political and military aspects. I cried so much for him that I had to use my ice pack eye shade the other night to prevent puffy-eye syndrome the next morning. Haven't used that since "I'm Sorry I Love You" drama.
Am very proud of myself for sticking it out. Episodes 50 to about 70 were so exciting! And I get to tell Mom I actually watched a 77-episode historical drama in its entirety!!

Whoa! Good job! You really put in the time here. (LOL) I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I had some problems with some characters (read: DAESU), but really it was excellent overall.
Sounds like you reacted to Hong's death the same way I did to the last two episodes of Mrs Go. Sleepless nights, angry conversations with the dramatists--lol--we're funny, aren't we.
I don't know how much of the story was true, but obviously Hong was executed and people had varying opinions about his guilt. I believe this is all tied in with the Soron/Noron controversies that went back to before old Yeongjo was born and his mother's relationship with Jang Hee Bin. Nothing but trouble.

It was funny to see the King on the rebound immediately after Hong's death. This time with an younger guy.
