Somebody different who hasn't been in historicals before. Or at least not as a title character. For these headline characters I don't like seeing the same people reused...Choi Soo Jong syndrome, no thank you.

Somebody different who hasn't been in historicals before. Or at least not as a title character. For these headline characters I don't like seeing the same people reused...Choi Soo Jong syndrome, no thank you. It's difficult for KBS traditional weekend historicals to do that. For one, the traditional weekend dramas don't have a lot of budget. These dramas always air on KBS1 and all of KBS1 programs are made by taxes collected from Korean people. (*Note : KBS is a state-owned company. KBS1 programs always say "This program is brought to you by your precious taxes" right before they air the show). Thus, KBS1 does not get any sponsors and commercials so they always have small budget for their shows. This is why you always see the same people over and over again because they can't cast actors who are too expensive and they don't want to take a gamble by casting a cheap actor who have never been on historical before. Why take a risk on casting an inexperienced actor when you can just cast an experienced historical actor at a same or even lower cost? By the way, Yim Dong Jin pulled out of the drama because he felt he was physically unfit. The last time he played in any drama was seven years ago back in KBS Dae Jo Young and he officially retired from acting since then. He first accepted the proposal to play Choi Young after getting excited by the script he read, but he decided that long years of retirement made him physically unfit for a drama where he has to ride horses around all day in a freezing snowy weather at age 69. Seo In Seok, on the other hand, is still 63 and has been riding horses at 30 degrees Farenheit year after year as an active historical actor.

That makes sense, mostly--but I don't have to like it! Still, you'd think they could find somebody with potential who'd jump at the chance for a plum role, even with the lower pay. A lot of the more recent series have definitely not been taking risks...which maybe isn't such a great thing. Too bad.
Maybe it's a good sign for the series that a guy who retired seven years ago was so impressed by the script that he wanted to come back.
And it's good to see Jeong Ho Geun in this thing--I like him, he makes a good goon.

Casting Update (pic: Ahn Jae Mo as Yim Yeon in MBC God of War) Lee Bang Won(a.k.a King Taejong)(Actor: Ahn Jae Mo)- The 3rd King of Joseon Dynasty and the 5th son of Lee Sung Gye(a.k.a King Taejo) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_TaejongInteresting. Yu Dong Geun played King Taejong in Tears of Dragon while Ahn Jae Mo played Taejong's son Sejong and they will both be playing the father of their respective characters in Tears of Dragon as Father and Son again. Maybe they'll cast Lee Min Woo(Sejong's brother Prince Yang Nyung in Tears of Dragon) as King Jeongjong(LBW's brother and 2nd king of Joseon)?

Wow. What do you call this kind of casting? It truly is the words "The son becomes the father, and the father becomes the son". (last parts not entirely accurate though)
Still no promotional material?

Looks like we'll be seeing another version of this conversation, except Ahn Jae Mo won't be such a goody innocent young man as he is in this clip. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vc7JDrHQxA4Fun fact #1: Yu Dong Geun and Ahn Jae Mo also played father and son in SBS Yeon Gaesomoon as YDG played Yeon Gaesomoon and AJM played Yeon Namseng. Fun fact #2: SBS Yeon Gaesomoon's Yeon Namseng(Ahn Jae Mo) will be assassinating KBS Dae Jo Young's Yeon Namseng(Yim Ho) in this drama. (Lee Bang Won's assassination of Jeong Mongju) Fun fact #3: Seon Dong Hyuk played Lee Sookbeon, the blood brother of Lee Bang Won(Yu Dong Geun) in Tears of Dragon, and he will once again be playing Yu Dong Geun's blood brother as Lee Jiran, who was the blood brother of Lee Sung Gye.

Let me guess, that clip is Sejong begging his father not to have his in-law get killed.
Considering that Jeong Dojeon is going to get killed, I'm not sure if we'll reach that point in time of that clip, unless ther's something I don't know.

What I meant was the conversation between the same actors. That's why I said "except Ahn Jae Mo won't be such a goody innocent young man as he is in this clip," referring to AJM's role in this drama, the ambitious power hungry Lee Bang Won. The "goody innocent young man" refers to his Sejong role in Tears of Dragon.

I can only imagine what kind of conversation Yu and Ahn had when they were cast in their roles.

Wow, this is a confusing conversation indeed. LOL. I always look at Korean historicals--particularly on KBS--as a sort of repertory. Certain actors do historicals, and they learn the style of acting and the style of speaking, and then you can pop them in there where you need them. It's a shame if they are not well paid, because it's clearly hard work. Especially in the cold.

I just found this blog, providing information about the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. After looking at Jeong Dojun's profile, I think its safe to there's alot of good meat to work with. Chances are the writer are going to make ome changes though ( which is a bit inevitable) www.sungjinyang.com/history/click095.html

Portrait of King Gongmin and his beloved queen Noguk in the Royal Shrine of Joseon Dynasty. King Gongmin and Noguk are the only non-Joseon Dynasty King and Queen to be honored in the Royal Shrine of Joseon Dynasty, which shows Lee Sung Gye's respect to King Gongmin(the only Koryo king that LSG was actually loyal to) and justifies LSG as the true successor of King Gongmin(rather than King Woo, King Chang, and King Gong Yang). The tombs of King Gongmin and Queen Noguk in Kaesong. They are the only known king and queen to be buried next to each other in the history of Koryo dynasty. There is a hole between the two tombs inside so that the souls of Gongmin and Noguk can meet each other. Props to Koryo tomb architects.

Is it one of you guys? . Lot of interesting info here, even not knowing Yang's qualifications. I'm with Truth -- here's hoping this is a return to good, accurate storytelling.
