Start date : January 4th, 2014 Episodes : 50 I'm starting the thread to post the casting information. I know it's a bit early, but I started the Great King's Dream thread 9 months earlier than the original start date and I was just too excited by the first three casting so I just had to create a thread for this. Director : Kang Byung Taek (Emperor of the Sea) Writer : Jeong Hyun Min (Lee Hwae Young the Man of Freedom, President) Casting(picture : Cho Jae Hyun as King Uija in MBC Gyebaek) Jeong Dojeon(Actor : Cho Jae Hyun) - The brain behind Lee Sung Gye's foundation of Joseon dynasty. He was killed by Lee Bang Won(King Taejong), the son of Lee Sung Gye. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeong_Dojeon(picture : Yu Dong Geun as Lee Bangwon a.k.a King Taejong in KBS Tears of Dragon) Lee Sung Gye a.k.a King Taejo(Actor : Yu Dong Geun) - The founder of Joseon dynasty en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taejo_of_Joseon(picture : Yim Ho as Yeon Namseng in KBS Dae Jo Young) Jeong Mongju(Actor : Yim Ho) - Best friend and a rival of Jeong Dojeon. Jeong Mongju was one of the Koryo loyalists along with General Choi Young. He wanted reformation within Koryo unlike his friend Jeong Dojeon who wanted a foundation of new dynasty. He was killed by Lee Bang Won(King Taejong), the son of Lee Sung Gye. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeong_MongjuYu Dong Geun is back! This time as a father instead of the son he played in Tears of Dragon! The title is Jeong Dojeon but I think Lee Sung Gye might be the real main character since YDG is playing Lee Sung Gye. KBS may finally be coming to its senses, or maybe not. (We all had hope for Great King's Dream since it had CSJ in it, but it turned out it was yet another failure) I'll keep you updated on the upcoming casts or if there is any change to the above three castings.

Considering the streak of bad ones lately, its a bit surprising that you have so much faith in this one.
The director of Emperor of the Sea? Seems like a good sign. The writer of Lee Hoe-young? I didn't think Lee Hoe-young was that good so some worries here.

Considering the streak of bad ones lately, its a bit surprising that you have so much faith in this one. The director of Emperor of the Sea? Seems like a good sign. The writer of Lee Hoe-young? I didn't think Lee Hoe-young was that good so some worries here. I don't think faith is the word here, it's more like hoping that this could finally be a good one after all the recent failures. I mean this at least looks more promising than Empress Ki and all the other current or upcoming fusion sageuks. One of the reason why I have some hope for this show is because Yu Dong Geun is in this, which puts a lot of weight to show in my opinion, much more so than CSJ. As for the writer, there is a rumor that the writer could be changed to Son Young Mok, the writer of Iron Empress, but as of now Jeong Hyun Min is still the writer. JHM also wrote KBS President by the way. The fact that the director of Emperor of the Sea is going to direct this drama has its positives and negatives. Positives : 1. Emperor of the Sea was a fusion drama, but it still had weight in the drama almost as much as IYSS(a traditional historical) at the time 2. The director tried to stick to history as much as possible (not when they were in China but back in Shilla such as the struggle for power in the Shilla royal family, re-enactment of a Buddhist wedding, etc) Judging from this, Jeong Dojeon could have a lot of weight and stick to history as much as possible. Negatives : 1. Fantasy armor (Hope they don't do this in this drama) 2. Cliff jumping (but this is in every Korean saguek now, so probably not a big deal) 3. Gladiators (Lee Sung Gye was born in Yuan territory and grew up in Yuan until he came of age, so I really hope LSG and Jeong Dojeon don't turn into Yuan gladiators in Beijing) 4. Blood brothers (I have a bad feeling that LSG, Jeong Dojeon, and Lee Jiran will drink horse blood to become blood brothers, which I hope does not happen) 5. Love triangle (but this is also in every Korean sageuk now, so probably not a big deal)

Boy isn't this a real strange casting. Yu Dong-geun once again plays a role in the founding of Joseon, but is now playing Yi Bangwon's father. As Jor-El said, "The son becomes the father"

Thanks for the info on this, truth--have added it to the timeline and will keep my eye on it. Certainly an interesting choice of subject matter! Seems like it will be tough for them to turn this one into something far-out. But who knows....

Casting Update (Seo In Seok as Kyon Hwon in KBS Emperor Wang Guhn) Choi Young(Actor: Seo In Seok) - One of the Koryo loyalists along with Jeong Mongju. Famous for quote "One should see gold as if he is seeing a rock." His final words before execution was "The only crime I've committed was that I was loyal to my country. Grass will grow on my tomb if I've done anything wrong, however, grass would not grow at all if I had not done anything wrong." Believe it or not, the grass actually did not grow on his tomb until 1976, 66 years after the demise of Joseon dynasty. Choi Young and Jeong Mongju were both Koryo loyalists but the difference between him and Jeong Mongju was that he was a Conservative while Jeong Mongju was a Reformist. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choe_Yeong

I'm liking the cast so far. They should add Choi Myung Gil. She's played King Taejong's wife twice. I'm sure they can find a role for her. She's going to be in the drama Future Choice starting in October but her role should be limited. If this isn't going to air until 2014, there shouldn't be any scheduling conflicts.

I think she would be too old to play King Taejong's wife in this drama though so she should play King Taejo's wife in case she gets cast.

YES! Get that woman into this thing. She was so good in Sejong--except for the IYSS guy, my favorite performance ever. Great character, great acting.

Casting Update (pic: Park Young Gyu as Seol Pyung in KBS Emperor of the Sea) Lee In Yim(Actor: Park Young Gyu)- One of Shindon's buddy who enthroned King Woo after King Gongmin's death. He was killed by Choi Young. His last words before death was "Lee Sung Gye is not a man to be trusted. He is an ambitious man who dreams of becoming a king." Choi Young, however, didn't believe him and killed him without hesitation. According to rumor, this will be a very serious sageuk like Tears of Dragon. KBS realized the ratings will always be bad with sageuks with fusion elements like Iron Empress, King's Dream etc, so they decided to go back to their original style. They were going to do King Gwanghae at first, but they decided to go back to the era that began the legend of KBS sageuks instead.
